Course Information
Students are afforded the opportunity to further specialise in optional modules offered by each of the Engineering streams in their Senior Sophister year. Many of the modules are single-term courses. This provides flexibility and encourages increased specialist knowledge whilst ensuring graduates are ready to meet the challenges of the outside world.
Eligibility for Internship and Study Abroad
In order to be eligible to apply for an international exchange in the Senior Sophister year or to apply for the 4E4 Industrial Partnership/Internship module in the second semester of the Senior Sophister year, students must have a minimum grade of II.1 (60 – 69%) at the first sitting of the Junior Sophister Engineering examinations. Those required to sit supplemental Junior Sophister Engineering examinations will be deemed ineligible to apply. No exceptions to this rule will be considered.
See study abroad opportunities.
Senior Sophister projects
Students must take a final year project if they intend on leaving after the fourth year and they are not taking the 4E4 Internship.
Eligibility to proceed to MAI year
Students must achieve a minimum overall mark of 60% for the combined Junior Sophister and Senior Sophister years (on a 30:70 basis) at the annual session of the B.A.I. degree year in order to be eligible to proceed to the MAI year.
MAI projects
Students will be sent a list of available MAI projects at the end of the Senior Sophister year and asked to rank their preferences from 1 to 10. The allocation is made based on a student's Junior Sophister ranking.
2022 - 2023 MAI Project Presentation
Degree awards
Students who exit the course having obtained credit for years one to four of the course are entitled to the degrees of BA and BAI. Students who continue on to the MAI year and obtain credit for all five years of the course are entitled to the degrees of BA and MAI (St.).
Gold Medals
Engineering students may be eligible for a Gold Medal on the basis of their degree results at the end of the Senior Sophister year. The Engineering Court of Examiners' meeting at the Annual and Reassessment sessions makes recommendations to Board for the award of Gold Medal to Engineering students based on College criteria. Gold medals are awarded by the Board to candidates of the first class who have shown exceptional merit.
For details on the criteria for the award of Gold Medals see category 1 in the Academic Registry guidelines available at: https://www.tcd.ie/academicregistry/exams/assets/local/gold-medal-criteria.pdf .
