While increases in the State pensions have relieved the pressure on older people to some extent, rising prices may be eroding some of the benefits. This seminar is aimed at both older people and policy analysts who wish to gain an insight into the consequences of poverty for older people as well as how to maximise their incomes from claiming welfare entitlements....

Some of the staff from SPARC ran the Ladies Mini Marathon on Monday 2nd June. They collected sponsorship for Friends of the Elderly of
Dublin's North Inner City (working to alleviate loneliness among older
people living alone) and the Muthande Society for
the Aged of South Africa (working, inter alia, with grandparents looking
after grandchildren orphaned by AIDS). A big thank you to all who gave sponsorship. The final amount raised was EUR 1825.

Changing Lives in Ageing Societies: Exploring the Relationships between Ageing Research, Policy and Practices'
Many researchers and organisations have expressed the intention to contribute towards transforming the lives of older people in Ireland and abroad. Yet the ways in which they can achieve this aim are rarely explored. The interface between research and policy is frequently referred to in discussions concerning policies of relevance for older people (such as pensions and long-term care). ‘Evidence-based policy-making’ is a catch-phrase utilised by both academics and policy-makers, yet explicit attention to its meaning and application is scant. This conference seeks to gain a deeper understanding of this interface between research and policy.
The Social Policy and Ageing Research Centre has recently completed its second book. This is entitled ‘Home Care for Ageing Populations: A comparative analysis of domiciliary care in Denmark, the United States and Germany’. This book will be launched by Ms. Máire Hoctor T.D., Minister of State with responsibility for Older People, Dept of Health and Children. It is written by Martha Doyle and Virpi Timonen and will be published by Edward Elgar Publishing.
