The report on the Profile of Community-Dwelling Older People with Disability and their Caregivers in Ireland was launched on 7th June in Trinity College Dublin by Prof. Rose-Anne Kenny, Principal Investigator, Tilda. This report provides new data on the care of community-dwelling older people in Ireland with the view to shedding light on challenges and opportunities in the Irish care system.

New Research project on Living and dying with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Dr. Virpi Timonen is a co-PI in a major new interdisciplinary capacity enhancement project on Living and dying with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Population based Analysis of Palliative Needs, Services and Outcomes in non-malignant terminal illness. This Health Research Board (HRB) Interdisciplinary Capacity Enhancement (ICE) grant has been awarded to an interdisciplinary team consisting of Prof Orla Hardiman (lead – PI) and co-PIs Prof Charles Normand (health economist, TCD), Prof Anthony Staines (epidemiology, DCU), Dr Regina McQuillan (Consultant in palliative care) , Prof Ivan Perry (Epidemiology, UCC), and Dr Virpi Timonen (Social Policy, TCD) for a period of three years, 2012-2015.

The project, which will shortly appoint three post-doctoral researchers, will generate a framework for optimal management of ALS and explore its relevance for other neurological conditions, adopting a multidisciplinary palliative-based approach.

Forthcoming workshop hosted by CARDI: Re-framing dementia

The European Foundations' Initiative on Dementia (EFID) will hold a half day workshop on 21 June in the Crown Plaza, Dundalk (hosted by CARDI). It will focus on how to develop and promote new perspectives of communication on dementia. Speakers include: Professor Baldwin Van Gorp, KULeuven, Belgium; Professor Eamon O Shea, Irish Centre for Social Gerontology; Professor Bob Stout, Co-Chair of CARDI; Dr Ken Logue (Chair of EFID) and Tom Costello, The Atlantic Philanthropies. New research project on intergenerational solidarity and justice in Ireland launched by TCD and NUI Galway

The Social Policy and Ageing Research Centre (SPARC), in the School of Social Work and Social Policy of Trinity College Dublin and Irish Centre for Social Gerontology (ICSG), as part of the Lifecourse Institute, at NUI Galway are collaborating on a research project to explore intergenerational solidarity and justice in Ireland. By this we mean how people of different generations in Ireland live together, help each other and depend on one another in their daily lives, and how they perceive the social policies that support individuals at different stages of the life course. Examples include making provision to meet costs of health care, pensions and social welfare, and family members or neighbours of different ages helping each other out with everyday tasks. Understanding how people think about and practice intergenerational solidarity at individual and societal levels will instigate a new national dialogue on intergenerational justice in Ireland.

Results from First Wave of TILDA launched

The first results from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA), a national study of 8,000 older people aged 50 and over, were launched on Monday May 9th by the Minister for Health and Children, Dr James Reilly. Speakers at the launch included Prof Rose Anne Kenny, TILDA Lead-PI, Professor Alan Barrett, TILDA Research Director, Prof Charles Normand (TCD), Dr Hilary Cronin (TILDA) and Dr Virpi Timonen (TCD, School of Social Work and Social Policy).
