The GSF was established in 2006 for students researching social gerontology at a postgraduate level, with a view to creating a wide community of Irish social gerontology postgraduates. It is a forum run by students for students.
The first event of the GSF took place on the 25th of January 2007. It was hosted by students from the Social Policy and Ageing Research Centre, Trinity College. Students from universities around Ireland presented their work and a successful day was had by all. It is hoped that similar events will be held in the future hosted by other universities.
