Aims and future vision

There are a number of strong clinical and basic research groups in Ireland, with established clinical cohorts in a number of key neurodegenerative disorders that are linking up as part of the IN-BIND network. Some of these are highlighted below:

    Dr. Sean Kennelly Tallaght Hospital
Unversity College Dublin
Dr. Niamh O'Sullivan UCD
Dr. Hilary McMahon UCD

All of these individuals / groups are involved in biomarker sampling to a greater or lesser extent but, at present, there is limited co-ordination or standardization of procedures and little infrastructure or administrative input to support, monitor or map activity.

To address this IN-BIND members meet regularly to examine the feasibility and agree a number of core areas of activity that the network should be involved in. The network seeks to leverage existing resources to further establish itself and identify partners in Industry or funding opportunities to support, develop and sustain biomarker research into the future.

The network also seeks to leverage existing resources to further establish itself and also identifies potential industrial partners or funding opportunities to support, develop and sustain biomarker research into the future. Core areas in the network include: training and certification of researchers, research management, clinical cohorts, laboratory standards, novel biomarker development, ethics and advocacy. The continuing development of IN-BIND will accelerate the development and use of biomarkers for neurodegeneration in Ireland and create a strong platform for Ireland’s participation in collaborative research in Europe in the coming years.
