Profile

I graduated in 1998 with a Diploma in Biomedical Sciences from the Dublin Institute of Technology and a B.Sc. from Trinity College Dublin. After a brief period in the pathology laboratory of Waterford Regional Hospital I accepted a post-graduate research position at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm , where I had spend time as an ERASMUS exchange student during my undergraduate studies. My post-graduate research was on cholesterol oxidation products called oxysterols, under the mentorship of Prof. Ingemar Bjorkhem. In 2003 I defended my thesis, entitled ‘Studies on Oxysterols: Origins, Properties and Roles’. After the completion of my thesis I continued was employed as a post-doctoral researcher at the Karolinska Institute, investigating the role of oxysterols in the brain.

In December of 2004 I became the first Irish person to be awarded a Swedish Brain Foundation post-doctoral research fellowship which provided substantial momentum for continuing my research and enabled me to initiate a significant project on the development of a novel transgenic model, which was subsequently funded by Pfizer. It also enabled me to investigate the regulation of pathways for brain cholesterol elimination.

In late 2006 I returned to Ireland where I began working as a Research Project Grants Officer at the Health Research Board, Ireland where I was responsible for the management of a portfolio including the HRB Clinician Scientist Awards and the HRB Translational Research Awards. In 2007 I returned to the School of Biological Sciences at my alma mater to take up a position as a Lecturer in Biomedical Biochemistry, with responsibility for both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research.

Research Interest: Sterol Neurobiology Research
