Postgraduate Taught
The Irish Department currently runs two taught postgraduate courses.
- Postgraduate Diploma in Old Irish
- MPhil in Medieval Irish (incorporating Early Irish and Classical Modern Irish)
In the academic year 2025/26, we are will be offering our Diploma in Old Irish and our MPhil in Medieval Irish.
The Diploma in Old Irish is a beginner’s course that gives students a solid grounding in the language and literature of Old Irish (600–900). This is the period of the language in which ancient sagas like the Táin, some of the Irish language’s most beautiful poetry, as well as the so-called ‘Brehon’ laws, were written.
The MPhil in Medieval Irish is for more advanced students. It aims to give you the skills you need to edit and translate texts from manuscript. In this coming academic year, the MPhil will concentrate on Classical Modern Irish only, with modules covering palaeography, language, metre, editorial principles, contemporary linguistics and literary and historical topics. Courses in Old and Middle Irish at MPhil level will run again in 2026/27, with modules on Early Irish prose, Early Irish poetry, Early Irish law, historical linguistics and Middle Irish language.
