Éigse na Tríonóide 2024

Trinity’s Irish language festival, Éigse na Tríonóide, will take place from 12-16th February 2024 in collaboration with the Students’ Union, An Cumann Gaelach and the Irish Language Office. A wide range of events will take place with students, staff and members of the public of all levels welcome.

Éigse na Tríonóide 2022

Éigse na Tríonóide will take place from 7-11th February 2022 in collaboration with the Students’ Union, An Cumann Gaelach student society and the Irish Language Office.

Events are free and will take place mostly on Trinity’s campus. All are welcome. You can view the full programme of events here.

Irish Language Residency Scheme -

Applications are being accepted for the first-year Irish Residency Scheme. Places are provided in apartments that are located in Trinity Hall, Dartry and a €1,000 grant payment for the promotion of the Irish language.

Applications are welcomed from students who will be in their first year of study in September 2021. The Residency Scheme is not limited to students from Gaeltacht areas nor to students who attended Irish-medium schools; it is open to all.

Town Hall Meeting on Trinity's Fourth Irish Language Scheme

Notice of online Townhall meeting on Friday 5th February at 12.00pm.

The university community is invited to take part in the consultation process on Trinity’s fourth Irish Language Scheme. A townhall meeting will be held to provide further information on the Language Scheme and consultation process, and students and members of staff will be invited to express their views on Irish language services to be provided under the Scheme.

Éigse na Tríonóide 2016: Trinity's Irish Festival in the Heart of the city

Trinity’s An Cumann Gaelach, in association with the Irish Language Office and the Students’ Union, is delighted to announce the programme of events for Éigse na Tríonóide 2016 . The Éigse is a week packed with vibrant and inspiring events which aim to celebrate the Irish language in the heart of Dublin city. This exciting festival runs from Monday 1st February to Friday 5th February inclusive, and features events for many areas of interest. Among the programme highlights this year, we will have Architectural and Art Tours; a Trinity Rainbow Celebration with Micheál Ó Conghaile agus David Norris; A Literary Evening to commemorate 1916; Fugitive na Gaeilge and a Mega DJ Night with Trinity FM!

Request for submiussions- preparation of Second Language Scheme by Trinity College Dublin

Trinity College Dublin proposes to draft a second Scheme in accordance with Section 11 of the Official Languages Act 2003. The primary objective of the Act is to ensure better availability and a higher standard of public services through Irish. The current Language Scheme (2010-2012) is available at

Trinity College Dublin now wishes to invite representations in relation to the preparation of a draft scheme from any interested parties. Ideally submissions, which will be made available on Trinity College’s website, should be forwarded electronically to gaeloifig@tcd.ie

Alternatively they may be posted to Scheme 2 Submissions, Irish Language Office, Trinity College, Dublin 2. Information in relation to the mandate and role of Trinity College Dublin and services provided by it to the public  is available on www.tcd.ie

Applications are now being accepted for the Dartry Student Residency scheme (Trinity Hall), for students who will be coming to Trinity College in 2012. 12 places are being offered for 1st year students in 2012-2013.

Éigse na Trionóide 2012

An exciting week of events is in store in the city centre this year during Éigse na Tríonóide 2012, Trinity College's annual Irish language festival. The Éigse will take place next week (Monday January 30th to Friday February 3rd).The Éigse programme has now been announced. Amonst the many events are a Gaelic breakfast each morning in the Hist Room, a debate and public lecture, a tour of the historic campus, a knitting session through Irish, a careers information session "Gairmeacha le Gaeilge", a "colours" soccer match, a "Taster for Beginners" and two church services in Irish- as well as plenty more! The highlight of the week for students will be the Gig Mór featuring Aslan, in the Workman's Club on Thursday night. The Éigse Programme in full is available here- and there is something to suit all tastes! Enjoy!

Symposium on Official Languages Act 2003 in TCD- 21 January 2012

The School of Law and the Irish Language Office, Trinity College Dublin, in Association with the Four Courts branch of Conradh na Gaeilge (and with the support of Guth na Gaeltachta) are holding a Public Symposium on the Official Languages Act 2003 in Trinity College on Saturday, 21 January 2012.

“Acht na dTeangacha Oifigiula: Leasú Chun Feabhais”  (the Official Languages Act 2003: Increasing Its Effectiveness) will be the title of this symposium, which is being held in the context of the review recently announced by the Government of the operation of the legislation, and its effectiveness.

This symposium will be comprised of three separate elements:

1. SESSION 1 (10.00-11:45 AM): a Review of the Implementation of this Legislation since 2003, with speeches from the Official Languages Commissioner, Seán Ó Cuirreáin in relation to the experience of his own office; from a representative of the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht; and a perspective from an Irish Language Officer in a public body, in relation to how the legislation operates internally in an public body.
2. SESSION 2 (12.00-1:30 PM): Perspectives on the Effectiveness of the Legislation, with contributions from a legal practitioner (Dáithí MacCárthaigh BL) in relation to how the legislation operates in the legal system; from Julian deSpáinn, General Secretary of Conradh na Gaeilge, on the views of Irish language organisations on the effectiveness of the legislation and their proposals for its improvement; and from Éamonn MacNiallais from the community campaigning group Guth na Gaeltachta on experience of how of the legislation serves language rights on the ground in the Gaeltachtaí, and the improvements which they feel are necessary.
3. SESSION 3 (2.00-3:00 PM): Open Discussion Forum- Differing Perspectives on the Legislation in the context of the Review, with Irish language organisations and individuals. Emer Ní Chonaola, (TG4) will chair this discussion forum. Ms Ní Chonaola is the anchor news presenter on TG4. Originally from Spiddal, she is a graduate of the National University of Ireland, Galway.

It is the objective of this symposium to compile a comprehensive Paper, based on the day's proceedings, on the range of issues which must be taken into consideration in the Governmental Review. This will be achieved through retaining a rapporteur, who will closely follow the proceedings of the day and will prepare the Paper, which will then be submitted to Government for consideration as part of its review process.

This event will be open to students, legal practitioners and the Irish language community, as well as representatives from Irish language organisations and others with an interest in the topic, and all viewpoints will be particularly welcome in the discussion forum.

Refreshments will be available. The day's proceedings will commence at 10.00am with a welcome from Professor Gerry Whyte of the School of Law, Trinity College, and a few words from Eithne Reid O’Doherty BL, chairperson of the Four Courts branch of Conradh na Gaeilge.

DETAILS OF SPEAKERS

Seán Ó Cuirreáin

Seán Ó Cuirreáin was appointed on 23 February 2004 as the first Official Languages Commissioner, under the Official Languages Act 2003. He was reappointed for a further six year term on 23 February, 2010. The role and powers of the Language Commissioner are set out in the Act, and he enjoys complete independence in his role as Commissioner.

Aonghus Dwane
Aonghus Dwane is Irish language officer in Trinity College, which introduced its Irish Language Scheme in 2010, and is also a solicitor, who worked on the DPP’s Irish Language Scheme during his time in that office.

Dáithí MacCárthaigh BL

Dáithí MacCárthaigh is a barrister. He is also coordinator of the Law and Irish programme at the King's Inns. He lives in the Rath Cairn Gaeltacht.

Julian de Spáinn
Julian de Spáinn is General Secretary of Conradh na Gaeilge since 2005, and before that was manager of Seachtain na Gaeilge Teo. He was President of the Union of Students in Ireland in 2000/01.

Éamonn MacNiallais

Éamonn Mac Niallais is the spokesperson for Guth na Gaeltachta (a non-party political campaigning group focussed on the Irish language and the Gaeltachtaí). He is also the Administrator of the Gweedore Centre of  Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge.

Glór na mBan: Women's Voices in the Gaelic Tradition

As part of International Women’s Week and Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations in 2011, a unique cultural event is being organised in Trinity College Dublin on Wednesday the 9th March at 6.00pm.

“Glór na mBan: Women’s Voices in the Gaelic tradition” will link poetry and song, in a special fireside performance in the Dining Hall.
The poet Celia de Fréine will read from her work in both Irish and English, while the sisters Naisrín and Zarah Elsafty will showcase songs from the sean-nós tradition. They will sing songs reflecting both their Irish and Arabic heritages.

Vibrant Programme announced for Éigse na Tríonóide, TCD (Trinity’s Irish Language Festival)

A varied and exciting programme is planned for Éigse na Tríonóide 2011 (Monday 31 January-Friday 4th February). Among events planned is a launch with TG4 star Máirtín Tom Sheáinín, a Choral Mass, a Debate with the Phil and an “Open Mike”.

Wednesday’s programme features a Coffee Morning in the Buttery and a Learners’ Day (with an Open Session for Beginners in the Edmund Burke Theatre).

On Thursday you can take an historical tour of the campus, enjoy Evensong as Gaeilge and attend the Gig Mór in the Village. The GAA and Irish language icon Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh will be in TCD on Friday to commentate on a Gaelic football match between TCD and UCD at 2pm.

Registration for TCD Irish Classes 2010-2011

Registration sessions will be held for TCD's irish language classes for staff and students on Wednesday 6th October (2.30-5.00pm) and Thursday 7th October (9.30am-12pm) in the Atrium. Four levels are offered: A1, A2, B1 and B2. Spaces will be allocated on the basis of a draw. Further information is available here .

Applications are now being accepted for the Dartry Student Residency scheme (Trinity Hall), for students who will be coming to Trinity College in 2010. 12 places are being offered for 1st year students in 2010-2011.

Exciting week promised for Éigse na Tríonóide

Aslan- Louis dePaor- Rith 2010- the “Irish Ball”- students making the shape of a giant Gaelic Heart in Front Square!!

These are some of the highlights planned for Éigse na Tríonóide 2010 (Trinity’s annual Irish language festival) which runs from the 8-12 March in the heart of the capital city.

The programme commences lunchtime Monday with the launch of the lively Cumann Gaelach journal “Tuathal”. A large group of students will gather in Front Square at 3.00pm, attired in red t-shirts to form the shape of a Gaelic Heart, in the presence of GAA star James "Cha" Fitzpatrick.

On Tuesday, a Choral Mass will be celebrated in Irish, a bilingual Art Tour will be held on campus and a Céilí Mór takes place in the evening in Trinity Hall, Dartry, where a student residency scheme is located.

On Wednesday, the recent debating workshop sessions will culminate in the Debating Workshops Final. The well-known TG4 personality Máirtín Tom Sheáinín, will join us for the presentations of the Fáinne,  followed by music and a glass of wine. At 6.30pm, links between Ireland and Scotland will be celebrated in the Public Theatre with a concert featuring poetry and music from Louis dePaor, Ronán Browne and Griogair Labhruidh.  

Renowned group Aslan, along with The Hounds of Culann, will play at Gig Mór na Mac Léinn in The Village (Wexford Street) at 9pm, and a large and vibrant crowd is expected at this event.

On Thursday, Choral Evensong (Urnaí na Nóna) will be sung in Irish in the College Chapel. Later, TCD students will take part in Rith 2010 in the city centre, clad in formal dress wear for  Ball na Gaeilge (the main event of the week) to be held in the Russell Court Hotel at 9.30pm. There will be plenty to eat and to drink, and “oíche go maidin” (a night until morning) is expected!

A Campus Tour in Irish will take place at 2pm on Friday. The Éigse programme will be drawn to an appropriate close with ceol agus craic in the College’s “Pav” bar at 3pm, as the events of the week are good-humouredly dissected!

Trinity Colleges’ Cumann Gaelach is the most vibrtant student Irish society in the country, wioh  more than 900 students registered as members.  It was founded in 1906. The Cumann organises a Conversation Circle and Student Night each Tuesday in addition to regular social events in Irish and a debating competition.

 The Irish Language Office organises classes and events for staff in Trinity and works to comply with the Official Languages Act. It also administers the residency schemes and supports the Cumann Gaelach.

TCD Irish Language Scheme officially launched by Minister Ó Cuív

The  Minister for Rural, Community and Gaeltacht affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív TD,  officially launched  Trinity College Dublin's first Irish Language Scheme under the Official Languages Act  on  February 10th last.

This scheme sets out a range of areas in which Trinity College is committed to improving bilingual services to staff, students and the wider public. They include staff training and recruitment,  bilingual customer services, College  websites and bilingual publications, media and  information technology as well as the promotion of Irish as a living language on campus and in society in general. Trinity’s Irish Language Student Residency Scheme where groups of Irish speaking students live in student accommodation will be further developed. Engagement with Irish language organisations, alumni and wider society in the Irish language will also be  strengthened.

Trinity Provost, Dr John Hegarty, welcomed the three-year scheme stating that: “Trinity is committed to the promotion of the Irish language throughout the College.  As a university we have a long tradition of association with the language. Ireland’s first president and  Irish scholar, Douglas Hyde as well as  the renowned academic and writer,   Máirtín Ó Cadhain,  were  linked to the College. In all aspects of College life,  the language has been enshrined and the College’s Irish Language Scheme will build on these  existing strong foundations.”

“The Irish Language Scheme 2010-2012 will support and complement the existing work of Trinity’s Irish language office, in the academic sphere,  Irish and the Celtic languages, as well as student activities such as its  Irish language society, an Cumann Gaelach among others.”

The Irish language officer, Aonghus Dwane, added: “Trinity College's first Irish Language Scheme is the fruit of wide consultation in the College community and the cooperation and advice of Coiste na Gaeilge and the Official Languages Act Working Group. It demonstrates Trinity's commitment to our national language having a central role in Irish life.”

Gairmeacha le Gaeilge- Your Career with Irish

Information Session for all students interested in pursuing a career in the Irish languiage. To be held in the Atrium on Wednesday 4th November, 2.00-4.00pm.

A panel of gurest speakers from different sectors will speak about their experience.

There will also be information stands relating to the different secots of employment at this event. Refreshments will also be served. Admission free of charge.

Update on Dartry Residency Scheme 2009-2010

Candidates will be interviewed here in Dublin. It is expected that the interviews will be held in the final two weeksof July. A choice of 2 dates will be offered.

Bilingual Career Guidebook Promoting Irish in the Workplace Launched

A bilingual guide highlighting the range of career opportunities available to Irish speakers was launched to an audience of third level career advisors and graduate employees at the Graduate Recruiters Conference on April 29th last.  The publication, Do Ghairm le Gaeilge / Your Career with Irish, is the result of an inter-university editorial committee which included Orlaith Tunney, careers advisor in TCD, and was financially supported by the Higher Education Authority and the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. 

Do Ghairm le Gaeilge / Your Career with Irish provides an overview of the various sectors in which fluency in Irish would be an advantage, and in some cases a distinct requirement.  A result of the Official Languages Act (2003) has seen greater opportunities available for Irish speakers in sectors such the media, arts and heritage, public and private sector employment as well as teaching and translation.  The bilingual guide provides students and graduates with well researched information, case studies, web resources and hints and tips for incorporating Irish into their career.

Irish became an official working language of the EU in 2005 and is one of the minority languages being promoted by the European Parliament.  More than 600 public sector bodies are covered by the Official Languages Act (2003), including third level educational institutions, local authorities and other semi-state bodies, all of whom are obliged to provide certain services through the medium of Irish.  An increase in the number of private sector organisations targeting the Irish language market has also been noted.  Companies such as Microsoft, Samsung and Accenture have also developed Irish language practices in order to gain a competitive advantage.  

The publication of Do Ghairm le Gaeilge / Your Career with Irish is a direct response to the increasing importance of Irish in the workplace.  Launching the guide, Deputy Chief Executive of TG4 Pádhraic Ó Ciardha said: “The Irish language television production sector reflects the wide variety of jobs available for Irish speaking graduates – not only as presenters and scriptwriters, but also as project managers, translators, camera staff, editors and graphic designers”.  An electronic copy of the guide is available from www.gradireland.com/languages.

TCD asked to prepare Irish Language Scheme

TCD has been requested by the Minister for Gaeltacht, Rural and Community Affairs to prepare a "Language Scheme" under the Official Languages Act. The aim of a Scheme is to increase the level of services provided by a public body in the Irish language over a three year period. Éigse na Tríonóide- Trinity's Irish Language Festival

Plenty of Irish will be heard spoken around the campus of Trinity College Dublin between the 26th and 30th January, when the College’s annual Irish language festival “Éigse na Tríonóide” takes place. Trinity’s Cumann Gaelach has unveiled a diverse programme of events-  sport, concerts, tours, workshops, music, song and craic. There is something for everybody in this festival in the heart of Dublin city.

An energetic start will be made to events on Monday with “An Poc ar Buile”, as students do their level best not to fall off the electronic “goat”! There will be a chance to find out about TCD’s Irish language student residency scheme- Trinity’s own “mini-Gaeltacht” in which a group of students live in apartments and Irish is the daily language of communication. The Éigse will be formally launched on Tuesday night with a reception in the Atrium.  

On Wednesday interviews for the Fáinne will be held, and in the afternoon the Cumann Gaelach will challenege the GAA in a Gaelic football match.
On Thursday evening the “Phil” (Philosophical Society) will host a debate on Irish in the education system (with guest speakers) and the Éigse’s Big Night Out wil be held at the Village, Camden Street from 9pm onwards, featuring a Céilí, the Hounds of Cullen and JP “on the decks”.

This year, for the first time, the Cumann Gaelach will be working with Trinity’s Irish Language Office to provide some events which will bring staff and students together to celebrate the language.

The Language Commissioner’s Office will provide two information sessions on Tuesday 27th January, one for staff at midday and a general information session   in the Davis Lecture theatre (Arts Building)  at 2.00pm. These sessions will outline the rights of the public under the Official Languages Act 2003 and the duties on public bodies.
On Wednesday, staff and students will link up to enjoy “Béal Tuinne”, a special evening of song and music composed by Shaun Davey based on the poetry of Caoimhín Ó Cinnéide. This event is generously supported by alumni and friends of Trinity College through the Trinity Foundation.

In addition to many enjoyable social events, the spirit will also be catered for! Choral Evensong in Irish will be held at 5.15pm on Thursday in the College Chapel, and Mass in Irish will be celebrated at lunchtime on the Friday.

After the Mass on Friday, the Cumann Gaelach is organising a Guided Tour as Gaeilge of the historic campus.

It is clear therefore that “an Ghaeilge” will be highly visible (and audible) on the campus of Trinity during Éigse na Tríonóide. A timetable and further information on events is available on the Cumann Gaelach’s website at www.cumann.ie and also on www.tcd.ie/gaeloifig.

Two plays by JM Synge: "Glór na Gaeltachta"17-22nd November

"Glór na Gaeltachta", two plays by the renowned Irish playwright J.M Synge will be staged each day this week Monday-Saturday 17th-22nd November.

The two plays, “Riders to the Sea” and “In the Shadow of the Glen”,were translated into Irish by Tomás Ó Flaithearta. They are being staged by Trinity College's Cumann Gaelach (www.cumann.ie).

TCD team win Ó Dálaigh Moot Court final

Niamh Ní Chléirigh and Clár Ní Ógáin from TCD won the trophy for best team at the Bréagchúirt Uí Dhálaigh Gael Linn 2008 Moot Court competition at the Four Courts on the 7th November last. This is a competition held annually by Gael Linn for third level law students, in honour of the former President and Chief Justice Cearbhall Ó Dalaigh. It consists of an appeal of a court decision, and the case details are made available beforehand. The preliminary heats were held in the King's Inns, and teams from NUI Galway, TCD, UCD, the King's Inns and the Law Society took part. All the teams were of a very high standard and it is clear that the traineee lawyers understand very well the importance of Irish in the legal system!                                                                    

The final was held in the Four Courts before Her Honour Judge Mary Laffoy of the High Court. Cormac Ó Dúlacháin SC. agus Antóin Mac Giolla Choda SC assisted with the judging. Antoine Ó Coileáin, CEO of Gael Linn,  presented the permanent cup and a cheque for €600 to the winners and a cheque for €300 on the runner-up NUI Galway team. He said: "there are now more people than ever capable of offering a legal service in Irish. With the language having official language status in the EU, there are good career opportunities. Gael Linn is delighted to be able to encourage young lawyers through organising Bréagchúirt Uí Dhálaigh”.

Gallery added to site

A picture gallery has now been added to the website. There, you can see images from the Reception held on Thursday 16th October last. There, the Provost launched the Irish Language Office and welcomed the students participating in the Residency Schemes this year. He affirmed Trinity's commitment to the Irish language and said the appointment of a full-time Irish language officer was a demonstration of that commitment. There was a good attendance, including both staff and students.

A Reception will be held by the Irish Language Office in the Atrium in College at 6pm on Thursday evening 16th October, to welcome the students participating in this year's Irish language residency scheme.

Senator Ross welcomes appointment of full-time officer

TCD Senator Shane Ross has welcomed the appointment of a full-time Irish language Officer for College:

"I should like to welcome the appointment of a full time Irish language officer for TCD. Now that the cutbacks are in full swing it is essential that education is not threatened .Trinity's foresight in insisting in promoting  the language  is totally consistent with its traditions.
Trinity has a proud tradition of  fostering Irish. That tradition   include the seventeenth century Provost , William Bedell,  Ireland's first President Douglas Hyde who was a TCD student and an Irish scholar  and,  more recently, Professor Mairtin O'Cadhain who many of us can remember as students .
A full time officer recognises that tradition.
Today , the health of the Cumann Gaelach in TCD and its one thousand strong membership is a testament to the voluntary interest in the language from a large number of undergraduates. The new officer has a ready made base of enthusiasm for and good will towards Irish .  I know he will cherish and promote it in keeping with our great tradition. "
