Research Expertise
Description
. The role of folate and vitamin B12 in pregnancy: This incorporates two principal areas; (1) the cause of folate responsive neural tube defects, in particular the nutritional, biochemical and genetic parameters associated with these disorders and (2) the effects of inadequate folate or vitamin B12 nutrition on complications of pregnancy and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The role of these vitamins in other congenital disorders including oro-facial clefts and congenital heart disease is an extension of this area of interest. . The uptake and utilisation of folates in normal and deficient states: A particular area of interest is the effect of genetic variants in folate related enzymes on folate status and metabolism. Research methods include cell culture studies and studies on nutritional status in human subjects, stratified according to a genotype of interest. . The development and application of new techniques in the analysis of folates and folate related metabolites. including HPLC methods, amino acid analysis, radioisotope methods, microbiological assays and cell culture technology. . Links between folate and vitamin B12; specifically, the influence of folate and vitamin B12 status on methylation reactions and s-adenosylmethionine metabolism.Recognition
