Description of the research project funded by TRiSS Fellowship
Populations are ageing, the result is that older and younger adults share their working lives for longer periods than ever anticipated in a multi-generational workforce. What does this shared working space ‘look’ like, what are the experiences of these younger and older workers?

The aim of this project was to perform a scoping review to identify and synthesise extant national and international literature on the topic of ageism and intergenerational relations in the workplace to answer the question - what does the empirical evidence tell us about ageism and intergenerational relations in the workplace?

The resulting reports will be utilised as a springboard to inform funding applications on this topic, and to raise awareness of this topic in gerontological research circles.

Outputs of the TRiSS research project
As a direct result of obtaining the TRiSS Research fellowship, three outputs were generated working with Research Assistant, Ms Jo Greene i.e., two reports and a poster presentation accepted for an international gerontological conference. Additionally, the contents of the reports were outlined in a seminar held in the TRiSS seminar room in September 2023.   A further output, a journal article with a working title ‘Ageism and intergenerational interactions in the workplace: findings from a scoping literature review’, is a work-in-progress.

  • A 20-page report detailing the scoping review strategy, methodology and findings titled ‘Ageism and intergenerational relations in the workplace’.
  • A 19-page report titled ‘Irish Trade Unions and policies on ageism and intergenerational workplaces’.
  • A poster presentation at the 27th Nordic Congress of Gerontology in Stockholm, Sweden titled ‘Ageism and intergenerational dynamics in the workplace: a scoping literature review’ on Thursday 13th June 2024.

Additionally, a lunch-time seminar was held in on 28 Sept 2023 in the TRiSS seminar room titled ‘Healthcare, work and well-being: Through an active ageing lens’ at which the presenter Dr Jing Woo (Visiting Researcher from Gothenburg University and future research partner) detailed the scope and findings of the reports generated in her presentation to the participants.

I extend my thanks to the TRiSS Research Fellowship Committee for their invaluable financial support for my research and career progression in granting me this funding.
