Formal Organization Structure, Informal Organizational Structure, and Innovative Outcomes
Abstract:
The last decade has witnessed a renewed interest in the relationship between the structure of the R&D function and resulting innovative outcomes. Yet most extant research has focused on the static relationship between structure and outcome, remaining relatively silent about changes over time. The paper studies the effect of changes in formal R&D organization structure on innovative outcomes, in particular the degree to which informal networks moderate the relationship between change in formal structure and in innovation.
