1pm “The Enlightenment: Narratives of Light and Darkness.”
A public lecture by Prof Jürgen Barkhoff and Dr James Hanrahan from the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies.
The Enlightenment has shaped modernity from the 18th century to the present day more than any other epoch or movement. It chose ‘light’ as the central metaphor of its project to bring insight and clarity, to fight ignorance and lift taboos. But there is no light without darkness, and the relationship between the two is one of the most fascinating aspects of the epoch. This lecture, given by two Enlightenment specialists, will explore the centrality of ‘light’ as a concept and as a metaphor in the narratives and self-representations of this period and as part of its continuing legacy.
