11.30am Memorial Discourse by Professor James Lunney on James MacCullagh (1809 – 1847)

James MacCullagh entered Trinity College in 1824 and was elected to Fellowship in 1832. He was Professor of Mathematics (1833 – 43), and Professor of Natural Philosophy from 1843 until his tragic death in 1847. He made important contributions to the theory of light, but is also remembered for his elegant work on geometry.

2-4pm SAD – A talk on Seasonal Affective Disorder and the effect that light has on our mood

Speaker: Dr. Peter Clare, Student Counselling Service TCD

This talk will examine the prevalence, presentation and management of Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.). Dr. Clare will explore how S.A.D. differs and compares to other depressive disorders; What the presenting signs and symptoms are, and how they can be managed. The stigma associated with depression and help seeking behaviour will also be discussed.

5.30 – 7.30pm “Light Meter: Poets at Trinity Week”

An evening of poetry around the theme of light with poets Gerald Dawe, Ignatius McGovern and others, organised by the Oscar Wilde Centre for Irish Writing, the Centre for Literary Translation, the Schools of English and of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies and the Trinity Long Room Hub.

Readings across centuries and cultures by Alice Jorgensen, Corinna Lonergan, Sarah Smyth, Eve Patten, Ema Vyroubalova and others. Chair: Philip Coleman.

The centenary of the War will be acknowledged by the Library Archives lighting the east face of the 1937 Reading Room with the names and portraits of the Trinity College staff and students who fell.
