Theatre within Theatre: Critics talk about 'The Critic'

Date: 24 Sep - 24 Sep 2024
Time: 18:30 - 20:00
Venue: Synge Theatre, Arts Block

In our second annual partnership with Wexford Festival Opera, the Trinity Long Room Hub is hosting a special panel discussion on The Critic, this year’s WFO production of Irish-born composer Charles Villiers Stanford’s comic opera, based on the play by fellow Irishman Richard Brinsley Sheridan. With thoughts on plays within operas to the history of metadrama, our assembled experts will reflect on librettos, rehearsals, parodies and performance, and consider the role of critics both on and off the stage.

Guest speakers include Rosetta Cucchi, celebrated Artistic Director at Wexford Festival Opera, Conor Hanratty, acclaimed Stage Director for The Critic, and Una Hunt, renowned expert on Stanford and Professor of Performance at TUDublin. The conversation will be chaired by Chris Morash, international theatre historian and Seamus Heaney Professor of Irish Writing at Trinity College Dublin.
This year’s 73rd Wexford Festival Opera runs from 18 October - 2 November.
See The Critic by Charles Villiers Stanford on 19, 24, 27 Oct and 1 Nov.
