The right to food, the reality of hunger: Food insecurity on the margins

A symposium on food insecurities organised by the School of Linguistic, Speech and Communication Sciences.

This symposium will bring together international voices on food insecurity, including academics, practitioners and experts by experience. 
Focusing on persons and communities pushed to the margins by (settler-)colonialism, ableism and other forms of systemic marginalisation, the symposium will highlight the disproportionate impact of food insecurity on those groups who find themselves in spaces of exclusion.   
The keynote panel will introduce the normative foundation of the right to food and explore famine 'then and now' through considering of An Gorta Mor ('The Great Hunger' or the Great Irish famine), and the current starvation in Gaza. Considering the disproportionate impact of food insecurity of persons with disability, the second panel will discuss experiences of persons with disability in Somalia and Gaza, specifically, as well as addressing the global picture of this issue. The experiences of Indigenous Peoples and minority groups in relation to food, dignity and hunger will form a third strand of the day. The final panel will discuss examples of responding to food insecurity and food sovereignty on the margins, including consideration of the systemic drivers of change.
