Remembering Goldsmith: an illustrated talk

A lecture by Prof Moyra Haslett (Queen's University Belfast) a public lecture to mark the 250th anniversary of the death of Oliver Goldsmith organised by the School of English.

 This year commemorates the 250th anniversary of the death of Oliver Goldsmith (1728-1774), one of the most famous Irish writers of the eighteenth century. Goldsmith is renowned for several key works including The Vicar of Wakefield, The Citizen of the World, ‘The Deserted Village’ and She Stoops to Conquer, in addition to being a prolific author of non-fictional prose. This talk considers how Goldsmith has been remembered since his death by examining the visual record of his person and his works. The talk will be illustrated with slides of sculpture, paintings and book drawings.
