Blackness and the Irish historical imagination
A lecture by Prof Bill Hart (Ulster University) and Prof Philomena Mullen (TCD) as part of the Modern and Contemporary Irish History Seminar Series.
About the speakers:
Bill Hart, MA (Glasgow), PhD (Edinburgh), lectured in philosophy at the University of Sierra Leone in the 1970s. Since 1977 he has been lecturer and senior lecturer at Ulster University, Coleraine, and was briefly Head of the School of History and International Affairs, before retiring from university teaching in 2009. He has published widely in Philosophy and African Art History, and more recently on the existence of a black diaspora in Ireland's past.
Philomena Mullen is Assistant Professor/Coordinator of Black Studies and Deputy Director of the MPhil in Race, Ethnicity, Conflict at Trinity College Dublin. She is a trustee of the Association of Mixed-Race Irish (AMRI), a member of the African Scholars Association of Ireland (AFSAI), and part of the UN IDPAD steering committee for the Decade of People of African Descent (2015-2024). Her research explores the experiences of people of mixed African descent in Ireland through Critical Mixed-Race Studies, Black Studies, and decolonial perspectives, aiming to for a more inclusive understanding of Black identity beyond migration to include historical and communal aspects in 21st-century Ireland.
The Modern and Contemporary Irish History Seminar Series will take place at 2.30p.m. on Wednesday in the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts & Humanities Research Institute. It provides a forum for discussion and dissemination of new ideas, perspectives, and research on Irish history, Irish Studies and cognate disciplines. All are welcome. We particularly welcome members of the postgraduate community.
