Biography

As of 2024, and since 2018, Dr. Helen Evelyn Malone, PhD, MSc, RNT, SCM, SRN was appointed to the role descriptor: Visiting Research Fellow, School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin, The University of Dublin, Ireland. Helen was awarded an MSc (1984) (subjects Epidemiology, Statistics & Nutrition) and a PhD (1988) from the Department of Community Health, Trinity College, The University of Dublin. Helen was awarded a Nurse Tutor Diploma (1982) from University College Dublin and is a registered Nurse Tutor with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. In 2016, Helen was the 1st person to be awarded the role of Research Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin and worked in this role until she reached retirement age in 2018. In 2007, Helen joined The School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin. Helen's affiliation with the School of Nursing & Midwifery Trinity College Dublin spans over 16 years working mainly in research with some support teaching input. In 2011, Helen conducted the 'Practice Focused Research Workshops and Research Methods Lectures' on the Senior Sophister BSc nursing programme. In 2012, Helen conducted BSc Nursing programme - 'Tracheostomy Care' practical sessions at the Clinical laboratories School of Nursing and Midwifery Centre, St James's Hospital Dublin. In 2013, Helen provided psychology lecture input on the BSc nursing programme. In 2013, Helen delivered the series of lectures focusing on `tissue viability' on the MSc Specialist Nursing (Gerontological Care) programme. Helen acted as examiner on the 2013 MSc Specialist Nursing (Gerontological Care) programme. Helen was one of the 1st three nurses in Ireland with a PhD to register with the Irish Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. Helen is registered on three divisions of An Bord Altranais (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland): Nurse Tutor division, General Nurse division and the Midwifery Division. Helen is published as lead author in Journal of Advanced Nursing, British Journal of Nursing, Nurse Researcher, Irish Journal of Medical Science. Most of Helen's publications focus on statistical methods with a more recent emphasis on advocacy for Bayesian statistical techniques in Nursing and Midwifery research. Two of Helen's statistical papers attracted most of her 571 citations: Fundamentals of Estimating Sample Size (139 citations) and Awareness and Minimisation of Systematic Bias in Research (201 citations). Helen acted as reviewer for BMJ Open, The Annals of Public Health and Research and The Journal of Biology and Life Science. In 2017, Helen by invitation of the HSE (Health service Executive) conducted a statistical workshop at the Nursing and Midwifery Planning and Development, Mellifont Unit, Ardee, Co. Louth. In 1982, Helen by invitation of An Bord Altranais conducted communication skills workshops on the Public Health Nurse's certificate course. Helen has 42 peer reviewed publications in either peer reviewed journals or international conference presentations.

Most of Helen's publications focus on statistical methods with a more recent emphasis on advocacy for Bayesian statistical techniques in Nursing and Midwifery research. Helen's research interests also include healthcare shared decision making for children and young adults living with cystic fibrosis and the information needs of families caring for children living with 22q11 deletion syndrome.
