Projects
- Title
- Application of Logistics Principles to Optimisation of Paediatric Radiology Workflows
- Summary
- This is a novel approach to managing the complexity of paediatric radiology services. Paediatric radiology departments are more complex than those in adult hospitals due to the frequent need for sedation and anaesthesia to achieve diagnostic imaging. This project is in conjunction with the corporate management and IT departments in Children's Health Ireland and researchers in the Trinity Business School and will analyse current workflows and optimise them using business logistics principles. The aim is to prospectively optimise workflows in the radiology department in the New Children's Hospital (which will be the largest in Europe) before commencement of service there. This will mean that we can get better value from our staff and our equipment and should improve staff, parent and patient satisfaction with the service being provided

- Title
- A data-driven approach to the age at which female paediatric patients should be subject to pregnancy status determination prior to imaging using ionising radiation
- Summary
- Young patients are vulnerable when attending unfamiliar medical locations such as radiology departments. At present all female patients over the age of 12 years are asked about pregnancy when attending for certain imaging studies that use radiation. The choice of this age is not evidence based and the question is often asked in a rushed manner and usually by someone not known to the patient. This project is using population data to analyse the pregnancy inflection age and allow pregnancy questioning to instead commence at the age where we see the pregnancy rate become significant in our paediatric population. This will be applicable to radiology departments across the country using Irish data and around the world using suitable local datasets.

- Title
- Using Simulation Techniques to Teach Upper GI Contrast Study Technique to Non-Paediatric Radiologists
- Summary
- Using simulation techniques to allow widespread teaching of a key paediatric radiology technique (upper GI contrast study) to general radiologists who don't work in specialised children's hospitals. Upper GI contrast studies are a fluoroscopic imaging technique that allow skilled radiologists to diagnose small bowel malrotation and midgut volvulus in babies with bilious vomiting. Prompt diagnosis is imperative to allow emergency surgery to be performed in positive cases. Teaching of this technique is challenging due to the unplanned nature of the condition and widely dispersed radiologist workforce. This will be a novel simulated learning tool that will allow all radiologists to gain the specialist skills (normally only available in Children's Hospitals) required to diagnose babies with midgut volvulus (and exclude it) in hospitals of first presentation, avoiding the need for multiple patient transfers to Dublin every year. Unecessary transfers delay care for those who need it and cause stress, anxiety and potential harm to those who don't. This collaborative project is being planned and will involve the Trinity School of Computer Science and the RCSI SIM Centre for simulation in education and research.
