Stated Preference Evaluation of Real-time Passenger Information

Dublin Bus

  • Project Team:
    • Project Leader: Prof. Margaret O’Mahony and Brian Caulfield
  • Description:
    • This research concentrates on an evaluation of the Dublin Bus Real-time Passenger Information (RTPI) system Q-time. This system is based upon a differential GPS system and its performance will be evaluated on the Lucan QBC. This evaluation will take three stages, firstly an evaluation of the system’s on-time performance measuring its accuracy comparing estimated and actual time of arrival. This evaluation concentrated on the technical performance of the system.

The second stage was a user evaluation of the system. This involved completion of a questionnaire to ascertain passenger opinion with regard to the RTPI system. This evaluation will also include a willingness to pay (WTP) evaluation of the system. The data collected will be used to measure passengers’ perceptions and WTP information will put a quantitative value on how passengers value the service.

The final section of the research included a quality of service evaluation of the Lucan QBC. This was done using the guidelines of the Transit Capacity and Quality of Service Manual, (TRB, 1999) which has been used in the US to evaluate similar bus corridors. This section will provide an internationally comparable evaluation of the service that Dublin Bus provides on the corridor.
