Biography

María Remedios Fernández-Ruiz is a lecturer in the Department of Translation and Interpreting at The University of Málaga. She holds a PhD (2019, Extraordinary PhD Award) in the reception of African Literature in Spain, predoctoral research stay at Harvard University in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures and the Digital Humanities Laboratory MetaLAB. She specialized in teaching at University of Birmingham and University of Worcester (PGCE, 2004) and taught at Frankley Community High School (Birmingham) and the Spanish Lycee Luis Buñuel (Paris). She was appointed Regional Coordinator for Languages at Málaga Local Educational Authority (2012-17). She also worked as an Expert and External Evaluator for the National Agency for the Internationalization of Education (2015-16). Besides, she is the Spanish translator of Amy Liptrot, Malachy Tallack, Dambudzo Marechera, and Frederic Manning. Her PhD research examined the reception of African literature in Spain. She balanced empirical research by providing a groundbreaking quantitative analysis of the reception of African literature in Spain (in a time span of 47 years) with theoretical research by developing the concept of the fourth space in order to understand the sociocultural implications and translation complexities of translating the third space into a fourth society.
