It has been published in the International Practice Development Journal and is entitled 'A mixed methods approach to the development of a Person-centred Curriculum Framework: surfacing person-centred principles and practices'.
Research Collaboration Annual Report
This Annual Report marks the third year of the research collaboration between St. Patrick's Mental Health Services (SPMHS) and the Trinity Centre for Practice and Healthcare Innovation (TCPHI). There have been many achievements to date with SPMHS staff represented at the Trinity Health and Education International Research Conference (THEconf2022) as well as a number of articles that have been published.

DAVINA Project Report Launch
On May 18th, the School of Nursing & Midwifery and a team led by Professor Catherine Comiskey and Dr Sonam Banka-Cullen launched the report 'In Plain Sight: A Rapid Review of the International Literature and a National Estimate of the Prevalence of Women Who Use Substances and Experience Domestic Violence in Ireland'. The work was commissioned by the SAOL Project who support women who use substances in Dublin. They received funding from Rethink Ireland Equality Fund to run a three year pilot programme, DAVINA (Domestic Abuse/Violence Is Never Acceptable). This is the first project of its kind, with the aim to address the dual issue of substance use and domestic violence.
SEURO Launch
Provost Linda Doyle launched the new digital health research programme 'SEURO' (Scaling EUROpean citizen driven transferable and transformative digital health). SEURO has been awarded €3.9 million under the European Union’s (EU) Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme. Led by the Trinity Centre for Practice and Healthcare Innovation (TCPHI) at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, the project brings together an EU consortium of research institutions, SMEs, health service providers, EU networks and industry partners.

New Report Exploring Experiences of Carers in the COVID-19 Pandemic
Professor Amanda Phelan and colleagues in the School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin, have published a report from a study exploring carers' experiences of providing care in the COVID-19 pandemic. The research collaboration between the School of Nursing, Trinity College Dublin and Family Carers Ireland was supported by the Irish Research Council.
New Scoping Review Protocol
Mr Barry McBrien, PhD student in the School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin, has published a scoping review protocol in JBI Evidence Synthesis. Entitled 'Assessment of workplace integration of migrant nurses and midwives within international healthcare settings', it explores how migrant nurses enrich and help to meet workforce shortages in our healthcare service. Congratulations to Barry on his first publication from his PhD study which investigates the workplace integration of this population.
Managing COVID-19 in Care Homes
Professor Amanda Phelan and colleagues from Trinity College Dublin, Ulster University, University of Limerick, University College Cork and Dublin City University have published the report entitled 'Experiences of Directors of Nursing in Preparing for and Managing COVID-19 in Care Homes for Older People'. The research was supported by Nursing Homes Ireland (NHI) and the All-Ireland Gerontological Nurses Association (AIGNA). The research shows the real struggle that existed during the early stages of the pandemic for Directors of Nursing to be able to balance a range of competing demands, values, strategies and regulatory frameworks in order to provide effective care services for vulnerable older people.
Celebrating 5 Years Partnership with JBI
TCPHI is Ireland's first JBI Affiliated Group centre. A number of academic and research staff from the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin have done the JBI systematic review training accredited course and have JBI review certification. Professor Agnes Higgins (TCPHI) and her EOLAS colleagues from the School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin, the Department of Psychology, Maynooth University and Celbridge Adult Mental Health Services, Kildare, have published an article in Administration and Policy in Mental Health and Mental Health Services Research. The article is entitled 'Factors Influencing Attendee's Engagement with Group Psychoeducation: A Multi-stakeholder Perspective'. This study was funded by the Health Research Board.

New Article Published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry
Professor Agnes Higgins, School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin and Professor Declan McLoughlin, St. Patrick's Mental Health Services, as well as a wider team, worked together on a project about nursing home staff during the pandemic. The paper has been published ahead of print. The research finds that nursing home staff report high levels of post-traumatic stress, mood disturbance and moral injury during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Safeguarding Ireland Study
Professor Amanda Phelan, Dr Louise Daly and Dr Brian Keogh have conducted a study of Older People's Experiences of Shielding during the COVID-19 Pandemic. One of the findings arising from the study is that the impact of COVID-19 and the resultant shielding was experienced as a social disruption which impacted on participant's lives causing disruptions and losses to their social connections. New Article published in Issues in Mental Health Nursing
Marie King (St. Patrick's Mental Health Services), Aoife Farrington (St. Patrick's Mental Health Services), Dr Gráinne Donohue (TCPHI, Trinity College Dublin) and Dr Edward McCann (School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin) have published an article on the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health nurses. The aim of the research was to assess the psychological effects of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on mental health nurses. Overall findings confirm that mental health nurses are experiencing psychological distress as a result of working during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Grainne Vaughan (St. James's Hospital), Ms Geraldine Prizeman (Research Fellow, TCPHI), Jessica Eustace-Cook (The Library of Trinity College Dublin) and Dr Gobnait Byrne (Director of TCPHI) have published 'Use of mHealth apps by nurses in the management of chronic wounds: a scoping review protocol' in JBI Evidence Synthesis. While there are many mobile health apps being used in the management of chronic wound care, little is known about the ones that are being used by nurses. The objective of this scoping review is to explore nurses' use of mHealth apps in the management of chronic wounds and how these are being evaluated.

Lisa Douglas (St. Patrick's Mental Health Services), Dr Gráinne Donohue (TCPHI, TCD) and Dr Jean Morrissey (School of Nursing & Midwifery, TCD) have published an article titled 'Patient Experience of Physical Restraint in the Acute Setting: A Systematic Review of the Qualitative Research Evidence'. To influence clinical practice that governs the use of restraint, it is essential to explore patient experiences of its use. Therefore, this review aims to explore patient experiences in the acute setting.
New Article in Nurse Education in Practice
Eimear O'Sullivan, Eimear Gogan, Dr Louise Doyle and Dr Gráinne Donohue have published an article titled 'Decider Life Skills training as a method of promoting resilience with mental health student nurses on clinical placement'. It was found that training increased participants' confidence in facilitating service-user groups, improved their self-care and protected their mental health.

New Systematic Review
Congratulations to Dr Louise Daly and Dr Margaret McCann on the following new publication in the Journal of Clinical Nursing which is a result of the TCPHI collaboration with the Public Health Nursing services in CHO 7 and is funded by the NMPDU: McCann, M., Kelly, A.M., Eustace-Cook, J., Howlin, C. and Daly, L. (2021) Community nurses' attitudes, knowledge and educational needs in relation to urinary continence, continence assessment and management: A systematic review. The study found that although Community nurses play a pivotal role in identifying and supporting individuals who experience urinary continence issues, knowledge gaps may still exist.

New Article in the International Journal of Mental Health Nursing
A new article entitled 'Deciding to discontinue prescribed psychotropic medication: A qualitative study of service users' experiences' has been published by Dr Mike Watts, Dr Esther Murphy, Dr Brian Keogh, Ms Carmel Downes, Dr Louise Doyle and Professor Agnes Higgins in the International Journal of Mental Health Nursing. Many mental health service users decide to discontinue their psychotropic medication at some stage in the treatment process. This study explores people's experiences of coming off medication. Findings from this study demonstrate the importance of mental health nurses having a collaborative discussion with service users which may support safer decision-making and lessen the risk of people discontinuing medication abruptly.

''I came, I saw, I conquered': reflections on participating in a PhotoVoice project' is a new paper by Professor Agnes Higgins and colleagues from the School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin, the Health Service Executive (HSE), Maynooth University, and An Grianan Theatre, Donegal. This paper provides first-hand reflective narratives from participants of their involvement in the overall process, with particular reference to the benefits and challenges of engagement. The reflective narratives in this paper demonstrate the personal and professional benefits of sustained and meaningful engagement, while challenges such as power imbalances, identity management, time and cost commitments are discussed.
Intellectual Disability Nursing: An Oral History Project
TCPHI is delighted to announce the publication of Intellectual Disability Nursing: An Oral History Project, co-authored by members of the Intellectual Disability Nursing Team (Adjunct Professor Dr Colin Griffiths, Assistant Professor Paul Keenan, Dr Sandra Fleming, Dr Carmel Doyle and Michelle Cleary (Muiríosa Foundation) and their nursing colleagues published by Emerald Publishing Limited. Using the oral history research approach this unique monograph explores the careers of 31 nurses from Ireland and the UK who each had 30 years or more experiences of working in residential services for people with intellectual disabilities.
The Many Benefits of Advanced Nurse Practitioners
The Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has announced The Final Evaluation Report on the Impact of Implementing the Draft Policy on expanding Graduate, Specialist and Advanced Nursing Practice has been published by the Department of Health. The policy was implemented across the four service areas of older persons, unscheduled (ED), respiratory and rheumatology care and evaluated through the work of 124 ANPs appointed to these areas of services with known challenges. The independent evaluation of the policy implementation was led jointly by Professor Anne-Marie Brady, Trinity College Dublin and Professor Johnathan Drennan, University College Cork. The evaluation examined the specific impact of Advanced Nurse Practitioners on service challenges using several key indicators such as, access to services, waiting lists, avoidance of unnecessary hospital admissions, improved patient flow, and support for early discharge from hospital.

International Conference on Erasmus+ Project
An international conference on 'Person-centredness in Healthcare Curricula: Achieving Consensus' will take place on 20th May 2021 from 9.30am to 4.30pm (CET-1). It will present the proposed person-centred curriculum and launch the pilot website that the team have been working on. The team is led by Professor Brendan McCormack, Queen Margaret University, Scotland and involves collaborations with universities in Norway, Slovenia, Ireland and the Netherlands. The findings of this review may be beneficial to inform or promote more effective decision-making on the use of blended feeding.

Shane Kirwan, Nurse Practice Development, St. Patrick's Mental Health Services, Dr Brian Keogh, Assistant Professor and Dr Gráinne Donohue, Research Fellow, School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin, have published an article entitled 'Nurse leadership in implementing digital change in an Irish mental health service'. It explores the challenges of implementing large-scale digital change in a mental health service. It also promotes awareness of the need for nurse representation and nurse leadership in digital change.
New Article by PhD student
This article, published in Midwifery, offers insight and understanding on the perspectives of partners of mothers who experience postnatal mental distress. It is a systematic review and qualitative evidence synthesis by Jill Atkinson (PhD student), Dr Valerie Smith, Ms Margaret Carroll, Mr Greg Sheaf and Professor Agnes Higgins. It found that partners lacked knowledge on how to identify postnatal mental distress and how to access help. The distress impacted on their relationship with the mother and baby, their health and raised questions about disclosure.

New Paper Published in the Journal of Nursing Management
Professor Agnes Higgins and colleagues from the School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin have published a Special Issue paper entitled 'LGBT + young people's perceptions of barriers to accessing mental health services in Ireland'. The study finds that cultural competency training for practitioners, which address issues and concerns pertinent to LGBT + young people, is key to addressing many of the barriers identified. This study was funded by a grant from the National Office for Suicide Prevention (NOSP), Ireland.
New Paper Published in BMC Health Services Research
A new paper has been published by Professor Higgins and her team on the factors impacting the implementation of a psychoeducation intervention within the mental health system: a multisite study using the consolidation framework for implementation research. This research was supported by a HRB applied partnership award.

A new article on a rarely discussed topic has now been published by Anita Lonergan, St. Patrick's Mental Health Service, Dr Grainne Donohue, Research Fellow, TCPHI and Dr Fiona Timmins, School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin. Entitled 'Mental Health Nurse experiences of delivering care to severely depressed adults receiving electroconvulsive therapy', it has been published in the Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing which is an international journal for researchers and practitioners.
Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Success
Congratulations to Yvonne Muldowney, TCPHI PhD student, School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin, who has been awarded a Government of Ireland postgraduate scholarship. This innovative work is focused on developing and integrating palliative care in the ICU setting in collaboration with Dr Eoin Tiernan, Consultant in Palliative Care SVH, under the supervision of Professor Anne-Marie Brady and Professor Peter May. The project title is 'The development and testing of a protocol to integrate Palliative Care into Irish ICUs: A National Strategy Project.'
New Article in Learning Disability Practice
Two school nurses at Stewarts Care Ltd., Amanda Shovlin and Michael Flynn along with TCPHI Research Fellow, Dr Julia Louw and School of Nursing & Midwifery Assistant Professor, Dr Carmel Doyle, have published a peer-reviewed article entitled 'Implementing blended feeding for children with intellectual disabilities in a school environment'. The article explores the implementation of blended feeding for gastrostomy button-fed children with intellectual disabilities in the special school environment in Ireland.
Job Vacancy for Research Assistant
The School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin is seeking to recruit a research assistant to work on a project to develop a Risk Reduction Patient Decision Aid Toolkit for women with a BRCA+ gene mutation. New Publication in Mental Health Practice
Dr Gráinne Donohue, TCPHI Research Fellow, Dr Michael Nash, Assistant Professor in Psychiatric Nursing, Trinity College Dublin and Sinéad Hennessy, Advanced Nurse Practitioner (candidate) have published a peer reviewed article on the development of a health passport in enhancing physical health monitoring in people with Severe Mental Illness (SMI). 'Challenges experienced by paid carers providing palliative care to adults with intellectual disabilities' is the title of a new peer-reviewed article published in Learning Disability Practice by Sarah-Jane Boyle, a staff nurse in Stewarts Care Ltd. This is a wonderful achievement for her and Dr Carmel Doyle, the Principal Investigator of TCPHI Research Collaboration with Intellectual Disability Services.
JBI Systematic Review Published
Dr Geralyn Hynes, Associate Professor in Palliative Care and colleagues have published a Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) systematic review in the Journal of Psychosocial Oncology entitled 'You are at rock bottom: A qualitative systematic review of the needs of bereaved parents as they journey through the death of their child to cancer'.
New Publication in Mental Health Nursing
Professor Agnes Higgins, Professor in Mental Health and colleagues in the School of Nursing & Midwifery and Celbridge Adult Mental Health Services have just had an article published as Early View in the International Journal of Mental Health Nursing entitled 'Beyond the moment: Influence of a co-facilitated education intervention on practitioners' recovery beliefs and practices'. It is part of a HRB funded grant and a collaboration between Trinity College Dublin and HSE Mental Health Services.

Trinity Health & Education International Research Conference (THEconf2020)
The TCPHI was well-represented at THEconf2020 that took place on 4th to 5th March in the School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin. Posters and presentations were made by nurses in TCPHI research collaboration sites Children's Health Ireland at Tallaght, Muiríosa Foundation, Naas General Hospital, St. Patrick's Mental Health Services, St. James's Hospital and Tallaght University Hospital. New Paper Published in the Irish Medical Journal
Congratulations to Children's Health Ireland (CHI) at Tallaght ANP Ann Connolly who led a cross CHI study in collaboration with the Trinity Centre for Practice and Healthcare Innovation (TCPHI) and Cork University Hospital. It has been published in the February edition of the Irish Medical Journal. The study examined the efficacy and tolerability of Levetiracetam as a first line monotherapy in childhood epilepsy.

This publication is another great example of the research collaboration between the Trinity Centre for Practice and Healthcare Innovation (TCPHI) and nurses from Tallaght University Hospital. European Workshop and Summit on Cardiovascular Disease Prevention
Food for thought at the opening of the European Society of Cardiology Cardiovascular Disease Prevention which aims to explore strategies to better implement cardiac guidelines. Dr Gabrielle McKee from the School of Nursing & Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin presented the work of the ESC prevention working group which has identified that still over 50% of high risk cardiac patients are not meeting lipid, hypertension or physical activity guidelines.
New paper published in BMC Palliative Care
Dying in acute hospitals: voices of bereaved relatives a paper by Ó'Coimín, D., Prizeman, G., Korn, B., Donnelly, S. & Hynes, G., reports the views of bereaved relatives on the experience of care they and the person that died received during their last admission in two university adult acute tertiary hospitals. This research provides a powerful snapshot in time into what works well and what could be improved in end-of-life care in acute hospitals.
2nd Annual Nursing Research Day at Naas General Hospital
The 2nd Annual Nursing Research Day at Naas General Hospital was a great success with nurses presenting on a diverse range of their research topics such as sepsis and the ED triage system, the Red Legs project, advanced care planning in COPD, depression in patients with COPD & COPD and Quality of Life. Dr Gobnait Byrne, Director of TCPHI gave a presentation highlighting the research collaboration that exists between the research centre and the hospital. Read more.

Congratulations to nurses from TCPHI's research collaboration with Intellectual Disability services who presented posters at the Intellectual Disability Nursing Symposium that took place on 16th October in the Ashling Hotel, Dublin. 1st prize was awarded to Amanda Shovlin and Michael Flynn (nurses from Stewarts Care Ltd.) for their work with Dr Carmel Doyle and Dr Julia Louw on the topic of 'Developing a Policy Document for Liquidised Feeding in Children with a Gastrostomy Tube'. JBI Comprehensive Systematic Review Training Programme
The JBI Comprehensive Systematic Review Training Programme will take place in the School of Nursing & Midwifery, D'Olier Street from the 8th to 12th June 2020. The programme enables participants to learn how to conduct robust systematic reviews of different evidence types in order to provide the strongest possible evidence to inform decision making or clinical guidelines in healthcare. There are fifteen places available for which priority will be given to staff from health service providers who are collaborating with TCPHI. New JBI Systematic Review Protocol Published
'Experiences and perceptions of emergency department nurses regarding people who present with mental health issues: A systematic review protocol' - published by members of the TCPHI team and TCD School of Nursing & Midwifery: Mary B. Quirke, Gráinne Donohue, Geraldine Prizeman, Patricia White and Edward McCann. The full review is currently underway and the team are delighted that Jessica Eustace-Cook, TCD Librarian and Christina Lydon, Tallaght University Hospital have now joined this research collaboration.

Minister for Health, Simon Harris, launched a new model for developing advanced nursing and midwifery practice with the publication of the policy document - 'A Policy on the Development of Graduate to Advanced Nursing and Midwifery Practice'. New Paper Published in International Emergency Nursing
'The introduction of the Early Warning Score in the Emergency Department: A retrospective cohort study' - this paper by Catherine McCabe, Margaurita O'Brien and Mary Quirke is a great example of the collaborations that exist between the Trinity Centre for Practice and Healthcare Innovation (TCPHI) and Tallaght University Hospital (TUH). The purpose of the paper is to determine the effect of the Early Warning Score (EWS) and Manchester Triage System (MTS) on accuracy of the Manchester Triage System (MTS) and Emergency Department (ED) waiting times. World Café Event for CHO 7 Public Health Nursing Services
The World Café Event took place on Wednesday 5th June 2019. Its aim was to assist the Public Health Nurse to identify their research and innovation priorities. Participants worked in groups to identify research and innovation ideas in relation to child health, older people's health and other specific population groups. They then presented their Top 5 priority ideas identified for each of these fields.
