Prof Martine Smith

Prof Martine Smith is a CORU-registered Speech and Language Therapist and a Professor in Clinical Speech and Language Studies.

Much of her clinical and research work has focused on communication impairments in children and adults with multiple disabilities, including those with intellectual disabilities and those with significant physical impairments. A particular interest is how individuals who cannot produce speech learn to use alternative ways of communicating (Augmentative and Alternative Communication, or AAC). This includes communicating using low-tech systems such as manual signs or picture symbols as well as high-tech devices including tablet technologies.

A key interest is in how children and adults who have to use non-speech means of communicating develop personal identities, manage social interactions and participate effectively in society.
