Biography

Professor Sheerin is the Founding Head of School and Professor of Nursing at Maynooth University.

He is registered General and Intellectual Disability nurse, with extensive experience of nursing across a number of fields of practice. He was a recipient of an All-Ireland Nursing Research Fellowship in 1999, under which he undertook his PhD.

His research has largely focused on mental well-being and sought to address issues which impact such well-being.

His contribution to society is significant and has seen him lead the development of a national group focused on the human rights of persons with intellectual disabilities in Ireland, bringing together many local and national groups as well as individuals with/without intellectual disabilities. He has also been a contributor on such issues to print and visual media.

He was an affiliated academic of Trinity College Dublin Centre for Global Health and led health teams, both in a voluntary capacity and as part of his civic engagement role, to refugee camps across Europe (Calais and Lesbos). Caring is core to his values. Over the years, whether in healthcare, social action in refugee camps, community development in Malawi, building inclusion in Drogheda or academia, he has come to believe in the importance of human engagement. He has learned that if the relational work is not done, then the other work is much more difficult. So, he spends time building relationships and instilling a culture of inclusion and community. This was how he approached his previous role as Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin. He served as a College Tutor for 15 years.

During his time at Trinity College Dublin, he undertook many Senior Leadership roles. He was on TCD Board for 4 years, and was chair of the Equality Committee. An Equality Fund project, undertaken by him and his colleague, Gillian Wylie, set the groundwork for Trinity College's designation as a University of Sanctuary (UOS). He was co-chair of the UOS Group. Alongside that, he also engaged with the Trinity Inclusive Curriculum project, Athena SWAN and the Global Incident Response Steering Committee. Finally, he led the Irish Universities Association Heads of Schools of Nursing and Midwifery at the height of the pandemic, advocating for students at departmental, regulatory body and health service levels. Professor Sheerin was Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery there from 2020-2024. He was Head of Intellectual Disability Nursing from 2018-2020, and was Director of PG Teaching and Learning. He was also Acting Director of the former National Institute for Intellectual Disability.

He holds the position of Adjunct Professor at the School of Nursing Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin and Visiting Professor at the School of Psychology, UCD.

He is a Fellow of the European Academy of Nursing Sciences, NANDA-International, and the Royal Astronomical Society, as well as being a Member of the Royal Society of Biology. He received Fellowship of Trinity College Dublin in 2024.

Research Expertise

Description

Dr. Sheerin's principal areas of research relate to the health, well-being and rights of people of human diversity within both Irish and global health context. He has worked on the two most recent Irish studies into LGBTI issues (Visible Lives and LGBTIreland). He is also interested in professional development and was co-PI on the HSE-funded project, Shaping the Future of Intellectual Disability Nursing in Ireland as well as the SCAPE study into specialist and advanced nursing/midwifery practice.

    • The HEAL Project - internsHips in future hospitALs
  • Summary
    • The HEAL Project has 5 concrete activity phases 1) Setting the scene In the first phase of the project, a needs assessment and a scoping review will be developed. The needs assessment will determine the concrete needs, opportunities, anxieties, promoting factors and barriers related to the introduction of new learning methods that can be a supplement to the traditional physical internship in the future hospitals. The scoping review will collect and systemise existing knowledge about innovative methods in medical education in internships, identifying the barriers and promoting factors 2) Development Based on the needs assessment and the scoping review, this phase will be the development phase, the HEAL project partners will develop the Innovative Framework, which will be a generic process model, which will guide the end users (students, teaching staff and coordinators of internships) through an internship process from planning, implementation, assessment and evaluation. The model will motivate and promote collaboration, dialogue and co-creation among the end users to ensure high quality internships. 3) Testing After having developed a prototype of the Innovative Framework for high quality learning in internships, a testing period will follow, where concrete internships are organized and executed through the use of the Innovative Framework. A minimum of 60 students will participate in the testing from each country. A concrete testing plan will be developed for each hospital in close collaboration with the target groups. 4) Evaluation At the same time as implementing the testing phase, the evaluation phase will be implemented. As part of the testing phase for each hospital, a concrete set of success criteria and indicators will be listed and evaluated through questionnaires and focus group interviews. 5) Conceptualisation In this last phase of the project, the innovate framework for high quality learning in internships will be fine-tuned, adapted and finalized based on the input from the evaluation phase, and the following aspects will be added to the prototype; policy and implementation.

    • Technological application for sensory regulation of children with ASD in different natural contexts
  • Summary
    • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent impairments in social interaction and the presence of restricted, repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests, or activities (APA, 2013). About 1 in 54 children have been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) according to estimates from Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) (CDC, 2020). The recognized, widespread presence of atypical sensory reactivity among people with ASD recently led to its inclusion as a diagnostic feature of ASD in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) under the criterion of "restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities". In solving this challenge we need to promote the development of an innovative and adaptative technological platform where the sensory profile of the child with ASD is identified (Hypo or Hyperreactive) in the different sensory systems (auditory, visual, tactile, olfactory, gustatory, proprioceptive and vestibular).The platform will include several sensory strategies that aim to regulate the child in the daily activities (routines) and improve his/her participation and functionality in the home, kindergarten/school and community contexts. It is also intended that through this platform strategies can be adapted or added by the different professionals who work with the child and parents. This will allow better communication between all and, consequently, lead to more efficient participation of the child in his/her routines. "Track4A" aims to target the child"s 4 A"s (Attention, Arousal, Affect, and Action) to get a more regulated, participative and functional child with ASD.

    • SOOTHE: Responding to Mental Health Concerns in Middle and Older Aged People with Intellectual Disability
  • Summary
    • This is a project that will run in 2020 and will address mental health and wellness among middle-aged and older people with an intellectual disability and to develop interventions that can be employed by services and individuals to minimise ill-health and maximise positive mental health. It will involve shared identification of impending/real mental health issues and co-creation of preventions/interventions by service providers, carers/families and people with an intellectual disability themselves. Led by Prof. Fintan Sheerin, the project team brings together academics, researchers and technologists from Trinity College Dublin, University Medical Centre and Hanze University, Groningen as well as service users, carers and healthcare professionals in Daughters of Charity Service (Dublin), San Joan de Deu (Barcelona) and COSIS (Groningen). Apart from the individual benefits to participants, it will produce individualisable innovations and a replicable programme to stimulate and normalise discussion about mental health and wellness in other locations.

    • MOVEAGE-ACT Enhancing Activity and Mobility in the Community for Healthy Ageing
  • Summary
    • Overall aim: MOVAGE-ACT will engage older people across Ireland and France in a series of health-oriented, community-based events and activities to promote active and healthy ageing. Background: The focus of this project is the promotion of healthy and active ageing as well as active mobility among older adults. Drawing on expertise of E-Seniors and Age & Opportunity, older people living in France and Ireland will take part in events to celebrate (and educate on) healthy and active ageing. They will engage with each other, electronically, as a community of practice, contributing to and learning from these events. As such, they will build a community of healthy and active ageing. Rationale: Europe's population is ageing (18.9% of pop.), and may reach 25.7% by 2080. Many will be >75 years, when the sphere of life and mobility diminishes, with isolation and inactivity. Older people infrequently use bicycles or public transport (Donohue et al 2017), fearing injury. Reverse mobility may result with goods and services coming to the their homes. Mobilisation and social engagement help to maintain physical, emotional and mental health (Donoghue et al. 2016) and is central to this project.

    • Learning to Build New Lives: Trinity College Responding in Times of Refuge
  • Summary
    • This project aimed to create real engagement between refugees, asylum seekers and the College community - and so help to shape Trinity's response to the current crisis for those seeking refuge. Using the university as a place of public engagement, the project brought together asylum seekers living in and outside of Direct Provision, refugees, university staff and students to discuss how Trinity might become a place in which people seeking asylum and refuge 'learn to build new lives'. The project began with an intercultural gathering, grounded in the sharing of food, hopes and stories. This was followed by four open meetings, during which realities, barriers, hopes and ideas surrounding education were shared by those who have sought refuge and whose voices are too often unheard. This sharing was fundamental to the process of building solidarity between the participants and this became the basis for exploring how Trinity can meaningfully respond during such times of refuge.

    • This study has three overall aims to: 1. explore the impact of minority stress on LGBT mental health including experiences of coming out, school, bulling/violence/harassment, substance misuse and self harm behaviour and compare the research findings to the findings from Supporting LGBT Lives to evaluate changes and identify trends in the area mental health; 2. measure homophobic and transphobic attitudes and behaviours among the Irish general population and explore factors underlying them; and 3. identify priorities and make recommendations for future service developments based on the research evidence, best practice and evidence from Ireland and other jurisdictions.

    • Towards a full life - An evaluation of family support programmes for people with a disability in Ireland
  • Summary
    • The aim of this evaluation was to evaluate four Genio grant-aided family-focused initiatives from the perspectives of families of people with disabilities and services/organisations. The evaluation had seven specific objectives, which were to: . establish and identify the general and specific benefits derived by families and others through participating in each project; . evaluate the extent to which participating families formed informal support networks or other forms of informal support; . identify what families found most helpful about the specific project they were a part of and what they thought could have been done differently; . establish and identify the impact/benefits to each organisation as a result of running this initiative and learning at the organisational level; . identify what organisations thought could be done differently; . explore issues which arose from the projects and which need to be addressed at a policy or systemic level; and . explore and make recommendations on ways in which family support initiatives should be funded and sustained on an on-going basis.

    • SCAPE - Evaluation of Clinical Nurse/Midwife Specialist and Advanced Nurse/Midwife Practitioner in Ireland
  • Summary
    • This study, through extensive research methods, utilising a variety of data collection tools, examined the clinical outcomes of clinical specialists and advanced practitioners in Ireland. This study has demonstrated conclusively that care provided by clinical specialists and advanced practitioners improves patient/client outcomes, is safe, acceptable and cost-neutral. Nursing and midwifery care is provided in a complex changing environment and it is critically important that resources are utilised in a cost-effective, strategic manner. The study shows the potential of clinical specialists and advanced practitioners to support implementation of health policy, meet the changing health needs of the population, address patient expectations, contribute to service reconfiguration and provide nursing and midwifery leadership for the introduction of care models and care programmes into the HSE and, potentially, other health services. Clinical specialists and advanced practitioners support a safe environment for patients by increasing the use of evidence-based clinical guidelines. Their overall positive effect on patient/client care, other staff and the health services in general is very apparent. Given these considerable benefits, and the fact that the economic analysis did not demonstrate a difference in costs between services with clinical specialists/advanced practitioners and the comparison sites, there is a strong case for introducing more clinical specialists and advanced practitioners.

    • 'Right! Let's Speak Up for Ourselves!'
  • Summary
    • An accessible report was launched on 1st June 2010 in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, recounting participants' stories of a human rights day held in Trinity College Dublin in September 2009. These stories were prepared and presented by people with intellectual disabilities and for many of the presenters this was their first opportunity to engage in such an activity. The process for making the report was an inclusive one and the presenters chose their own media for telling their stories. The report, which was supported by a grant from the TCD Equality Fund, was launched in both on-line and printed format and is available for download on www.idrights.ie.
