Dr. Fiona Timmins
Adjunct Professor, School of Nursing & Midwifery
Biography
I am an Associate Professor in Nursing at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin. I qualified as a nurse in 1988 in the UK and took up an appointment in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Trinity College Dublin in 2000. I am have held management positions for much of my time at the School. Teaching mostly research and professional issues for nursing, I have had a consistent commitment to teaching excellence, and was awarded for this with a Provost Teaching Award in 2005. I have 20 years' experience as both reviewer and author in additional to several contributions to several international Editorial Boards, Conference Scientific Panels and Advisory Panels. I have published numerous papers, with 151 peer-reviewed papers listed in Scopus, and 11 textbooks. These publications represent collaborations with colleagues, from Canada, Portugal, Italy, Greece and the UK among others. This has meant a meaningful contribution to international debates within nurse education (e.g. management of absenteeism and nurse portfolio/reflective practice) and person-centred care (e.g. information and support requirements of cardiac patients and spiritual care provision). She has written or co-authored 10 textbooks. There are 1200 recorded citations of my published papers [Scopus]. My research lies within three distinct but overlapping themes: person centered care, spirituality and enhancing the professional education of nurses. I have presented widely on these topics: more than 180 international papers, with research replicated widely across the globe. My H-index (Scopus) is 20. I have 11 years experience as Editor; firstly as Book Review Editor with Nurse Education in Practice (Elsevier) (2010-2013); later as Associate Editor with Nurse Educaiton Today (Elsevier) (2013-2014) and Journal of Nursing Management (2013-2018). I have delivered a large number of writing for publication workshops both nationally and internationally over a 12 year period and have enjoyed mentoring authors during this process. In January 2019 I was appointed Editor in Chief of the Journal of Nursing Management.

- COST Action- Establish an INSiGHT Network
- Summary
- O1: Establish an INSiGHT Network by drawing together a broad range of academic disciplines, traditions, professions and worldviews, fostering knowledge that will develop a European wide understanding and operational definition of (or typologies in approaches to) spirituality to guide on-going enquiry. O2: Develop an online platform, accessed by proposers only, as part of an INSiGHT website that will serve as a forum to disseminate the group's aim, interactions and outputs to the Network. O3: Identify and review broad definitions of spirituality across the Network, through systematic methods and consensus, by building on available specialist consensus documents, the wide expertise available within the Network, and other peer-reviewed material. O4: Develop an evidence-based, user-friendly spiritual well-being assessment tool within the Network for use in healthcare practice, and also across the public sector and NGOs, such as immigration, social support, bereavement, prisons, and veteran support groups. This assessment tool will be accessible and available for use, without charge, on the COST Action website and published in an open access peer-reviewed journal. O5: Develop an online repository to aid understanding of spirituality and its relationship to religion, in a European context. Healthcare workers and others working with vulnerable populations internationally may access this repository and use the materials as a benchmark for providing spiritual support or referral.

- A phenomenological exploration of healthcare chaplains' experience of engaging with patients and service users from minority religious or non-religious groups in the Republic of Ireland (ROI).
- Summary
- Hospital in-patients and families are frequently in need of spiritual support, particularly during illness, in death, or when facing difficult or challenging life events. The healthcare chaplain is recognised as having jurisdiction to address spiritual needs and is generally called upon to support others in times of crisis. Using a phenomenological approach this research aimed to explore healthcare chaplains' experience of providing spiritual support to patients and families from minority religious and non-religious groups. The study revealed that healthcare chaplains display a wealth of skills, comprising insight, compassion, humility and empathy. Findings illustrate the significance of making sense of healthcare chaplaincy, the role of faith and of ritual, and the importance of education and training to inform and develop personal strength, resilience and creativity. Chaplains seek ongoing supports and at times, professional supervision, to facilitate self-awareness and 'self-work', as this is the foundation of quality chaplaincy care. This research is the first exploration of healthcare chaplains in this context. The work is important given the changing perspectives on religion and spirituality in Ireland and ongoing debates about the value of healthcare chaplains to address patients' needs in an increasingly secular society.

- An Exploration of Current Spiritual Care Resources in Health Care in the Republic of Ireland (ROI) and Review of International Chaplaincy Standards.
- Summary
- This study aimed to explore current approaches to and facilities for spiritual care provision in the Republic of Ireland (ROI). It also aimed to explore models and frameworks for healthcare chaplaincy and best practice in the area that could guide development of integrated, responsive future resources in the ROI. The findings identify that providing spiritual care to patients is a key component of hospital policy. Spiritual support is identified as the responsibility of the whole healthcare team with specific responsibility being attributed to the healthcare chaplain. Chaplaincy services are enshrined within the dominant faith, however the service is also perceived as a multifaith service. Most sites provided a sacred space or quiet place for clients, visitors and staff to contemplate. The description of the sacred space provided varied between the self-report and policy and website information received. The religious provision identified was consistent with contemporary distributions of religious affiliation in the ROI according to the latest Irish Census.

- Getting to Grips with Psychology - a text for Nursing Students written by Jan De Vriesand Fiona Timmins
- Summary
- This is a textbook designed for undergraduate mursing students. It comprises part of the Transforming Nursing Practice series published in Exeter, UK by Learning Matters Ltd. Our text aims to provide a range of psychology topics, traditional as well as contemporary, applied to nursing and health care that will provide a foundation for newly emerging and practicing nurses. It will address the psychological requirements for nurse registration and present theory and research, its application to the field, as well as psychological tools and skills that are integral to care provision. While the chapters will be constructed to allow them to be read separately, they will also build on one another. Key themes will be integrated in ways that allow the student to relate, reflect and exercise in order to build up a meaningful well structured and practical knowledge base around the psychology of nursing and health care.
