Recycling bins
Recycling bins - internal
Recycling bins are provided to each department involved in the bin-less office recycling scheme. Desktop Recycler eco-bins are emptied into these bins. Contact hackettd@tcd.ie to order bins.
Paper bins
Paper bins are available throughout college for storing loose or bagged paper. All types of paper (office paper, newspaper, magazines etc.) may be deposited in these bins. The paper may be loaded into the bins in bags or fed loosely through the slots.
Glass bins
Green, white and brown glass can be recycled in red recycling glass bins across Trinity sites. Lab glass containers can also be recycled, as well as clean, dry, uncontaminated lab glassware such as flasks, pipettes, burettes, etc. Please rinse the containers before recycling them, to minimise contamination and problems with vermin.
Mixed dry recyclables bins
These green bins are suitable for depositing clean aluminium trays, washed food cans, rinsed drinks cans, rigid plastics (bottles, cartons, tubs), light cardboard (such as cereal packs and other light cardboards), CDs and DVDs. Please wash all empty food containers before depositing them in these bins.
Clothes bank
Clean and dry clothing, which is fit to be worn can be deposited in the clothes bank by Pearse Street gate for donation to charity.
Battery bins
These bins are located throughout college (e.g. House 6, Students’ Union) for disposal of batteries for recycling. Please ensure lithium ion batteries are taped (e.g. with sellotape) to prevent ignition with other batteries, before you deposit them in these bins.
Recycling bays
There are a number of recycling bays for recycling all manner of items across campus, at St. James Hospital and at Trinity Hall. See the Recycling Map for locations.
External SolarBelly bins
There are two types of SolarBelly bin – those with a black ‘door’ on them (for landfill/ incineration) and those with a green ‘door’ on them (for recycling). Please ensure recyclables are clean of food and drink waste before putting them into these bins, so that they don’t contaminate the recyclables.
Electronic equipment cages
These cages can take any electronic waste except batteries and bulbs. However, if you are purchasing a new item (e.g. kettle/ radio/computer/tv/etc.), the cost of your purchase has already covered safe disposal. All you have to do is bring the old item into the shop (or have them remove it when they deliver) and they are legally obliged to accept it. If you dispose of items in these WEEE cages, Trinity has to pay a second fee (unnecessarily) to dispose of the electronic waste. Please think before you place an item here!
