Meet Our Indian Scholarship Students
Name: Rajat Nair
Course: Science
From: Mallya Aditi International School Bangalore
My name is Rajat Nair. I was born and brought up in India and spent a large part of my life in Bangalore, a metropolitan city in the South where I attended Mallya Aditi International School. I came in contact with Trinity College Dublin when a group of academics from Trinity visited the school in my last two years. Six Indian students got the opportunity to head to Ireland to partake in a workshop held by Science Gallery for one of their exhibitions in August of 2013. Not only did this experience give us a way to contribute to this exhibition- with two of our own installations- but also gave me a chance to interact with members of The Faculty of Engineering, Mathematics and Science in TCD.
I got to see first-hand how passionate the Professors and Researchers were about their fields of study and the facilities that were set up to promote student welfare and extracurricular activities. Trinity College is well known for its 'Institute of Neuroscience'. This was and continues to be a subject I have a great deal of interest in and the opportunity to study such a highly specific subject in my Undergraduate years seemed very exciting.
Lastly there exists a Scholarship opportunity for students from India. Being awarded an Indian Scholarship was what helped make my study at this prestigious institution possible. As of now, I have enrolled in the General Science Programme (TR071)- a four year course- wherein I am studying Biology, Chemistry and a variety of Maths and Geology modules. After my second year I intend to specialise in Neuroscience and finish my course with a B.SC honours in Neuroscience.
I would definitely recommend Trinity College to Indian students as an institution to pursue their higher studies.
Name: Lavanya Kumar
Course: Computer Science and Business
From: Sanskriti School, New Delhi
I am Lavanya Kumar from New Delhi, India. I went to school in Sanskriti School, New Delhi. It was always my goal to study Computer Science and Business at Trinity College as a road to ultimately pursue a career in Industry and Technology. This course provides us with a great deal of knowledge about the working of science related industries and also their management. I would not have been able to be part of this special institution if I wasn't given an Indian Scholarship by the Faculty of Engineering, Mathematics and Science.
Trinity College does not only focus on academic achievements but also on the development of the student as a whole. There are 113 clubs and societies to choose from which gives everyone the opportunity to volunteer in different fields and sporting events. Trinity's Societies have shown me immense warmth and have been incredibly welcoming. Every day at Trinity has its own meaning and a lesson to be learned! Trinity is not in the UK or in the USA - it is in Ireland, which has its own charm, with a fascinating culture and generous people. They say Ireland may have a bad weather but Irish people compensate for that!
Name: Manaswi Raghurama
Course: MSc in Environmental Science
From: BITS-Pilani
I am Manaswi Raghurama, a student from India and have received an Indian Scholarship from the Faculty of Engineering, Mathematics and Science in order to study for an Msc. In Environmental Science in Trinity College Dublin (TCD).
I come from a village near the Western Ghats (one of the ten 'hottest biodiversity hotspots' of the world) and the place has shaped me to a considerable extent. I did my Integrated MSc in Biological Sciences from BITS-Pilani, India. I look at the conservation and management of natural resources as an integral part of nation building. Being a member of Nirmaan Organization in BITS helped me to explore my interests. My first foray into ecology was my dissertation in BITS, in which studied carbon sequestration in the soil. I chose to join the MSc in Environmental Science in TCD, so as to get the necessary foundational training I would need. I am specifically interested in the ecological sustainability of rural ecosystems.
The School of Natural Sciences carries out research in almost all aspects of the environment, which gives me the flexibility to look at the subject from multiple perspectives, while also going in-depth into the area of my interest. Further, the batch of students on my course is composed of people from diverse fields, including the Social Sciences. There are also people with significant professional experience. This gives me the opportunity to learn from a great group of colleagues!
