As Trinity Women in Sport Week 2025 kicks off (24th – 28th February) and ahead of International Women’s Day on Saturday, 8th March, Trinity Sport is proud to celebrate the remarkable progress achieved through its Women in Sport campaign over the past year. Since its launch in February 2024, the campaign has made significant strides in increasing female participation, enhancing leadership opportunities, and improving the visibility of women in sport across the university.
Trinity ‘Women in Sport’ Campaign Key Achievements in 2024:
Leadership & Governance:
- The Trinity Sport Union Executive now has 52% female representation across its 21 members, ensuring that women have a strong voice in decision-making and governance within university sport.
Active Participation:
- Female membership in Trinity’s sports clubs now stands at 55%, highlighting a thriving and engaged female sports community.
- Female participation in social sport programmes has surged by an impressive 71% in 2024, demonstrating a growing interest and commitment to inclusive sporting initiatives.
- Trinity Sport Centre proudly supports 8,000 female members.
Coaching & Officiating:
- The number of female activators delivering social sport activities has grown from 2 to 11 in 2024 - a 450% increase, empowering more women to take leadership roles in sport.
- Eight female students have successfully received accreditation through the Student Sport Ireland (SSI) Women’s Student Coaching Academy.
Visibility & Media Coverage:
- Coverage of women’s sport on the Trinity Sport website has increased by 12% in 2024, ensuring greater representation and recognition of female athletes.
- Trinity Sport social media channels have seen a 27% rise in women’s sport content, bringing more awareness and engagement to female-led sporting achievements.
In addition to these achievements, Trinity Sport has completed its review of the 12 applications for Women in Sport Grants, which support various projects and events aimed at increasing female participation, visibility, coaching, and officiating in sport. A total of €5,253.50 has been awarded to successful applicants, funding initiatives such as:
- The ‘Women at the Helm’ event by the Sailing Club, the largest of its kind in the UK and Ireland.
- Level 1 Rowing coaching accreditation for eight female members of Dublin University Ladies Boat Club (DULBC).
- Training for female Canoe & Kayak Club members to achieve Level 2 Canoe Ireland certification.
- Female-only coaching sessions in golf, ultimate frisbee, squash, tennis, and fencing, aimed at increasing participation.
- Sport Ireland-recognised officiating and coaching courses for female members across multiple clubs.
These grants are made possible thanks to the generous support of Trinity Development and Alumni (TDA), whose contributions enable the continued growth and success of women in sport at Trinity. We look forward to seeing these projects take off in the coming weeks and the positive impact they will have on female sport participation.
The Trinity Women in Sport campaign, aligned with Sport Ireland’s Women in Sport Policy and ‘Realising Potential: A Strategy for Sport at Trinity 2022 – 2026,’ remains dedicated to driving long-term change. Michelle Tanner, Director of Sport and Physical Activity at Trinity, and Chair of the Sport Ireland Women in Sport Group reflected on the campaign’s success so far, “The progress we have seen in just one year is a testament to the commitment and passion of our students, coaches, and staff. Increasing female representation in leadership, coaching, participation, and visibility is not just a goal, it is essential. We look forward to building on this momentum and ensuring that women involved in all aspects of sport at Trinity continue to be supported.”
