Trinity Sport Club Highlights 2021 / ‘22

After two years of disruption due to Covid-19 sporting fixtures and events were back, there has been no shortage of standout sporting moments throughout the ’21 / ‘22 season for Trinity’s sport clubs. Here’s a look back at some of the highlights to be proud of. Well done to all alumni, athletes volunteers, coaches, sport club committee and club members.

DUHAC celebrated 150 years of athletics with Gold for the women’s team and silver overall at the IUAA Cross Country Championships:

In March, DUHAC (Dublin University Harriers Athletics Club) hosted the annual IUAA (Irish University Athletic Association) Cross Country National Championships for the first time since 2018. DUHAC’s hosting of the event also marked 150 years of athletics in Trinity. DUHAC excelled on the day as the women’s team claimed gold for the third year in a row while the men’s team finished in fourth position. Trinity College Dublin came second overall in the team competition, just behind Dublin City University.

Celine Gavin ran in a time of 18:31 to claim the silver medal in the women’s 5,000m event, Jennifer Elvin was next over the line for Trinity in sixth position with a time of 19:01 while Claire Rafter finished in eight place overall. In the men’s race, Pierre Murchan finished the 8,000m race in eight place overall.

Trinity Netball conclude successful season:

The Trinity Netball team recently concluded a fantastic season with a spectacular win over the Leinster Jaguars, overall, the team won 18 out of the 21 fixtures. With bonus points and an undisputed goal difference, it set the team as top of the league going into the semi-finals where they beat Boyne Netball Club, the team played both the semi-final and final on the same day which was a true test of their dedication, fitness and perseverance. The last match of the day was the final of division 2, between Leinster Jaguars and Trinity Netball Club. The final score was 51 to 21, however it did not reflect the amazing performance by the runners up, Leinster Jaguars.

Caoimhe Sexton, Netball team captain, commented: “I am proud of this team, it has been one of the toughest seasons yet and I am over the moon that all the hard work has paid off. The final was our best performance yet, the girls made it look effortless with amazing goals from Floriane and Lola. It has been an absolute pleasure to captain this team.”

Trinity Rugby U-20's win epic encounter with UCD to retain the Fraser McMullen Cup:

At the end of 100 plus minutes of pulsating rugby at Lakelands Park, the Dublin University Under-20s retained the Fraser McMullen Cup with a 28-23 come back over UCD. The last club to lift the trophy in both 2018 and 2019, Tony Smeeth’s Trinity Rugby found themselves staring into a five-point deficit heading towards the end of normal time. However, a Conor Booth try brought Trinity back on level terms and with full back Harry Colbert amassing 10 consecutive points during extra time, they gained the upper hand over their arch-rivals.

O’ Reilly Try Inspires Memorable Colours Triumph for Trinity Rugby:

Trinity Rugby men’s team consolidated their position in the Division 1A of the All-Ireland League (AIL) by finishing in fifth place and claiming the annual Dudley Cup and Colours trophy against UCD. Trinity Rugby won their first Colours three in a row since 1991 after overcoming UCD 34 – 27 at a wet College Park.

Trinity Gaelic Footballers crowned All Ireland Fresher Champions:

Trinity’s first year footballers were crowned the Rory O’ Connor Electric Ireland Fresher division two champions, following a 14-point victory over opponents IT Carlow. Trinity began the brightest of both teams, within ten minutes they took the lead with a 0-04 to 0-01 lead – following a goal and point from Carlow IT they took the lead for the first and only point in the game. On 23 minutes, the long-awaited Trinity goal came, and Trinity never looked back from that point on.

Trinity Volleyball Men’s and Women’s team win Student Sport Ireland Cup Finals:

Trinity women’s volleyball team beat TUS to win the Student Sport Ireland Cup, the team are the first to have won both the student league finals and the student cup finals in Ireland. Trinity Men’s volleyball team also won the Student Sport Ireland Cup final against NUIG.

Dublin University Boat Club – National Rowing Championships:

The Rowing Ireland National Rowing Championships took place in August 2021 which saw 503 crews competing over 55 categories, there were 130 races held with 52 finals over the weekend. Dublin University Boat Club (DUBC) club captain, Tom Stevens, won the Club X 1 event and set a course record of over ten seconds. The DUBC novice crew won the 4x+ event and set a new course record.

DU Swim Club Water polo intervarsity's:

Dublin University Swim and Water Polo club had amazing performances at the Water Polo Intervarsity's, the men’s team made it to the final and won again University of Ulster in a very exciting match which ended 10 – 9. The women’s team made it to the final against Dublin City University but just came up short with another very close final.
