After taking this course students should be better able to:

    • Think critically about how globalization and development issues are expressed and experienced through the body.
    • Understand the impact of gender on development and globalization and vice versa.
    • Understand how a person’s experience of globalization and development differs in India, China and Brazil and beyond.

Module Content

The first half of the module reviews different concepts and measures of poverty used nationally and internationally, including differences between monetary and non-monetary approaches and the role of the post-2015 Development Agenda. The second half of the module focuses on the role of social protection systems and anti-poverty programs in different regions and contexts (e.g. Global North vs Global South; humanitarian emergencies).

Globalization and Development are two much discussed and debated concepts. How should we understand and address them today?  How are they linked? What are the trends in both globalization and development? We will investigate the forces that are shaping development and globalization with a particular focus on gender; on experiencing development and globalization through the body; and locating gender and the body in the ongoing socio-economic transformations and challenges of sustainability, specifically with reference to the rise of China and India, and Brazil.
