Programme Overview
Our PhD programme combines comprehensive coursework in the first year with independent research in the subsequent years. PhD candidates work closely with faculty members who are experts in various sociological fields, ensuring high-quality supervision throughout their doctoral journey.
A significant number of entrants to the programme are graduates from Irish universities, yet the programme has also attracted students from all over the world. Graduates, or current students, have come from Ireland, Italy, the USA, Poland, Germany, the UK, South Africa, Israel and Palestine, to name just a few. This international mix adds a positive and exciting dimension to the life of the Department.

Is it for me?
The PhD in Sociology is ideal for individuals passionate about sociological research and theory. It is particularly well-suited for those aiming for academic careers or roles in research institutions, policy-making, or NGOs. The programme provides an in-depth academic experience, preparing students to be leaders in their fields.
Candidates are expected to master research techniques; develop their facility for academic writing; and become adept at presenting and defending their views in front of an audience of their peers. Graduate students are provided with ample opportunity to achieve these goals through one–on–one interaction with their supervisors, collaboration with other members of the Department and a weekly seminar series.
A thriving informal community among postgraduates and proximity to cultural and social resources in the centre of Dublin provides support and companionship for the demanding process of completing a PhD.
