Non-EU Exchanges provide a unique opportunity to study at world-class universities across the world.
Programme Overview
The Department of Sociology offers participation in 20 international non-EU exchanges. Each university typically accepts 2-4 students, with the University of California campuses hosting 20-25 students annually. Unlike Erasmus, applicants must meet a minimum academic requirement of an Upper Second (II.1) and compete with students across Trinity.

Application Process
Applications for non-EU exchanges must be submitted through Trinity’s International Admissions and Study Abroad office. After selection, students must consult the relevant departmental and institutional pages of their host university and ensure they meet registration deadlines for modules. The responsibility lies with the student to liaise with administrative staff at both the host institution and Trinity.
Financial Considerations
These exchanges are non-fee-paying, but students must budget for flights, accommodation, and living expenses. Most partner universities are ranked in the Top 50 of the Times Higher Education Global University Rankings, making this an excellent investment in your future. Irish grants and scholarships continue to be paid during the exchange period.
Key Notes
Discuss the exchange programme with your family during Michaelmas Term to understand the financial and personal commitments. The Department of Sociology enforces a strict cancellation policy - you can only withdraw from an exchange in the most exceptional cases with a medical certificate or tutor note submitted to the Sociology Office.
