The Department of Sociology at Trinity College Dublin is a leading centre for research and teaching, dedicated to understanding social change and addressing contemporary challenges. We are recognised as a leading hub for research and teaching, focusing on areas such as migration and ethnicity, inequalities, families and education, digitalisation and social networks, and conflict and social mobilisation.

Research Excellence
The Department is internationally known for its work on migration, ethnicity and inequalities. Our main are migration, integration and identities; employment, education and stratification; power, conflict and resistance as well as digitalisation and social networks. The Department also has a long-standing collaboration with one of Ireland’s premier research institutes, the Economic and Social Research Institute.
Innovative Teaching
The Department has won multiple staff and postgraduate teaching awards for its outstanding quality of teaching. We deliver modules across four different and offer two taught Masters programmes. Our research-led teaching approaches include a range of innovative methodologies to develop independent learners and equip them with transferable skills needed for today’s knowledge-based societies.
Global Engagement
The Department is one of very few at Trinity College where around one third of undergraduate students participate in international mobility programmes. Each year, we welcome a growing number of visiting students from around the world who enrich our shared multicultural learning environment. Our Visiting Professor and Scholar Programme has attracted international researchers from around the globe to spend time with us.
Public Outreach
Together with our colleagues at University College Dublin, we have initiated a series of high-profile public keynotes in which internationally acclaimed speakers discuss contemporary sociological issues. We actively engage with national and international policymakers, our research informs public policy-making and debates and we offer evening courses, including Race, Ethnicity, Conflict to enable the public to engage with the Department.
