Welcome to new member of staff, Dr Rowland Imperial
Dr Imperial joins the School as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Applied Linguistics (TESOL). Rowland recently obtained his DPhil in Education from the University of Oxford. As a trained linguist and language educationalist, Rowland’s research interests are in applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, and the sociology and philosophy of education. His recent work draws on Latin American philosophy of liberation and decoloniality thinking, contemporary studies in the sociology of language, and histories of social activism, to promote what he calls a “critical-ethical politics” for English language education. Rowland will be based in the Centre for Language and Communication Studies, and will teach on the Joint Honours Linguistics programme as well as the department’s M.Phil. courses in Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching.
