Professor Lorraine Leeson
Professor in Deaf Studies, C.L.C.S.
Professor in Deaf Studies, Centre for Deaf Studies

Biography

I am Professor in Deaf Studies at the Centre for Deaf Studies, and Associate Vice Provost for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (2021-), previously serving as Associate Dean of Research (2018-2021).

My research work is multidisciplinary, influenced by my background in Deaf Studies, Gender Studies and Linguistics. I have published widely on aspects of the linguistics and applied linguistics of signed languages with a specific interest in Irish Sign Language and in the area of sign language interpreting.

My doctoral work was the first to examine aspects of the morphosyntax of Irish Sign Language, and subsequent to this, I have published and lectured widely on aspects of the grammar of Irish Sign Language, and in the area of signed language/spoken language interpreting. I was a member of the first cohort of professionally trained Irish Sign Language/English interpreters in Ireland, is a member of the Register of Irish Sign Language Interpreters (RISLI) and continues to interpret occasionally.

I have engaged in pan-European research work with academic institutions, Deaf communities and interpreting organisations for over two decades.

I am currently working on a number of projects including:

*DeafSigns - Unlocking Educational Opportunities in Sign Languages in Europe. DeafSign is a European Centre for Modern Languages (Council of Europe) funded project which seeks to establish guidelines, recommendations and practical resources to promote quality standards for the provision of learning opportunities for vulnerable learners, particularly deaf & hard-of-hearing (DHH) children and their parents, caregivers and family members, heritage signers and DHH refugees and migrants with linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds in Europe who have no access to sign language education. (2024-27)

*Deaf Women and Maternity Care in Ireland (2024). Funded by Reach Deaf Services, this project is led by the School of Nursing and Midwifery, TCD (Prof Deirdre Daly and Dr Grainne Meehan) and the Centre for Deaf Studies (Prof Lorraine Leeson and Teresa Lynch). The project aims to document the experiences of Irish deaf women vis-a-vis maternity care, and feed learning from this study into Irish maternity care services.

*Conceptualisation in Interpretation (ongoing). Working with Prof Terry Janzen (University of Manitoba) and Prof Barbara Shaffer (University of New Mexico) on a project that explores how experienced spoken and signed language interpreters conceptualise and represent the words and gestures of source language speakers when working into a wide range of languages. Taking cognitive linguistic and gesture studies informed approaches to our work, we also look at how signers and speakers' conceptualise events, and in particular, the use of gesture space in representing these concepts.

*EDI in Higher Education in Ireland (2023-4). Funded by the Higher Education Authority's Gender Equality Enhancement Fund, this project is led by Prof Lorraine McIlrath (Mary Immaculate College) with Dr Helen Maher (University of Galway), Dr Marie Connolly (University of Limerick) and Prof Lorraine Leeson (Trinity College Dublin). The project brought together some 50 academics and practitioners working in Irish HEIs on equality, diversity and inclusion related themes and culminates in an open access volume to be published by Palgrave in late 2024.

Research Expertise

Description

My research spans 3 domains: (1) linguistics & applied linguistics of sign languages (SLs), (2) interpreting studies (IS), & (3) trans-disciplinary work. As a student, I found just one paper published on Irish Sign Language (ISL) & very little empirical work on sign language interpreting (SLI) or sign language teaching & learning (SLT&L). I've dedicated my career to changing this by promoting a culture of empirical research, documenting & interrogating aspects of ISL & interpretation. I am particularly adept at navigating the space between linguistic research and applied practices. At European level, I've done a great deal of ground work that has supported increased recognition & inclusion of signed languages. My work has directly influenced the establishment of core competencies for European SLIs & SL teachers. I am a European Centre for Modern Languages (ECML)/Council of Europe (COE) expert on SLs, & have examined aspects of the T&L and assessment of SLs for professional purposes (PRO-Sign 1 & 2). This underpinned a critical body of pan-European empirical research, led to a series of international conferences, & inclusion of SLs as a focus for ECML"s work. I served as a consultant to the COE on the development of the modality inclusive Common European Framework of Reference for Languages Companion Volume (2020), which, for the 1st time, presents descriptors of competence for both spoken and signed languages. This segues with research on SL policy in Europe, theorising how adult learners navigate the process & how SL teachers respond to learners. A current COE/ECML project, "DeafSign" seeks to ensure national policy makers consider the linguistic needs of deaf migrants, refugees, heritage signers & their families. I am frequently invited to advise NGOs, universities and governmental bodies at home and around the world on issues relating to my domains of expertise. My linguistics work includes analyses of the role of gesture, metaphor, metonymy, simultaneity, & depiction in SLs. Much of my ISL data comes from the "Signs of Ireland" corpus, which I spearheaded. This has facilitated significant description of aspects of ISL by myself and other scholars. My IS research explores provision of interpreters in a range of domains. A current project marries work from cognitive linguistics, gesture studies and IS (with Janzen & Shaffer), investigating how simultaneous interpreters of spoken & signed languages conceptualise events. At Trinity, I've led development of a cohort of researchers working with Grounded Theory (GT) methodologies & developed a GT of interpreting interaction, Effortful Engagement, which has fed follow-on work. This theory considers the work required of all stakeholders in interpreted interaction (most look only at the interpreter"s cognitive efforts). I have been invited to present keynote addresses on this around the world. Other multidisciplinary work includes a focus on gender based violence (Justisigns 2), maternity care, & machine translation for sign languages (MTSL) " e.g., the multi-award winning SignON project (Horizon 2020) sought to develop MTSL for multiple spoken & signed languages. MTSL is decades behind that of most spoken languages. I led the consortium"s ethics work package & was central to embedding a deep commitment to co-construction with deaf communities across the project. My work has fed into work leading to the legal recognition of ISL (ISL Act 2017) & the development of the Register of Irish Sign Language Interpreters (RISLI).

    • TORCH -Transforming Open Responsible Research and Innovation through CHARM
  • Summary
    • The future CHARM-EU R&I dimension will promote a challenge-driven transformative agenda with a transdisciplinary and intercultural vision laying its foundation in 3 cross cutting principles of Responsible R&I: Interdisciplinarity/Transdisciplinarity, Gendered innovation, and Ethics and Integrity; and on 4 transformational modules: establishing a common R&I agenda and action plan; reinforcing cooperation with non-academic actors; mainstreaming of comprehensive Open Science practices; and involvement of citizens, civil society and public/cities authorities in R&I. The TORCH project will help CHARM-EU to become a complete European University by enhancing the academic and research networks already started with the Erasmus+ Project. The TORCH proposal will drive impact at three different levels: alliance level, institutional level and societal level, with priorities in accelerating and catalysing processes of institutional change, in stepping up the support to Gender Equality in R&I policy and in exploring and supporting citizen science.

    • Silent Harm: Empowering Deaf Women Surviving Domestic Violence Post-Covid in Rural Areas.
  • Summary
    • Worldwide, one in three women has experienced physical or sexual violence, primarily by an intimate partner, according to data gathered in 2021 by the World Health Organisation. The Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns increased incidences of gender-based violence (GBV), creating a "double pandemic" (Bettinger-Lopez & Bro, 2020). Atop these unsettling figures, research has found that deaf women are 2-3 times more likely to experience abuse than their hearing peers (Crowe, 2017). During the pandemic, deaf women were at a double disadvantage in Scotland and Ireland because there were no support services in sign language for deaf women experiencing GBV. The problem was and still is, exacerbated in rural areas, as interpreting provision tends to be concentrated in urban areas. Through the Ireland"Scotland Bilateral Network Grants scheme, the RSE has awarded Professor Jemina Napier, Heriot-Watt University, to collaborate with partners at Trinity College Dublin (Lorraine Leeson and Lianne Quigley), and further the project: SILENT HARM: Empowering Deaf Women Surviving Domestic Violence Post-Covid in Rural Areas. Led by four women who are fluent in British and Irish Sign Languages"two hearing, two deaf; two who are GBV survivors"thisproject aims to empower deaf women who have experienced GBV by delivering training to police officers and sign language interpreters in rural areas in Scotland and Ireland. Expanding on the findings of the European Commission-funded JUSTISIGNS 2 project (2020-2022), this award funded training workshops for, and in collaboration with Police Scotland and An Garda Síochána, the Scottish Collaborative of Sign Language Interpreters, the Association of Sign Language Interpreters UK, the Council of Irish Sign Language Interpreters, and deaf community organisations such as Deaf Links (Scotland) and the Irish Deaf Society.

  • Summary
    • Justisigns is concerned with Deaf people's access to justice. It is specifically concerned with the following issues: (1)The lack of or limited status afforded to signed languages inhibits access to information at all stages of the legal process for Deaf people; (2)The limited understanding in legal settings of the constraints imposed by the interpreting process when working between any two languages, with additional challenges arising when working between a spoken (auditory-verbal) and signed (visual-spatial) language; (3) The lack of awareness of the historical educational and cultural background of Deaf people which gives rise to challenges in legal settings. Partners include KU Leuven (Belgium), Heriot Watt University (Belgium), HfH (Switzerland), the European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters (EFSLI) (Belgium), the European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association (EULITA) (Belgium), with input from Gallaudet University (USA). The project is managed by Interesource Group (Ireland) Limited.

    • PRO-Sign: Sign languages and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages €131,790
  • Summary
    • The main aim of this ECML funded project (2012-2015) is to establish European standards for specifying sign language proficiency in Deaf Studies and Sign Language Interpreting programs at institutions of Higher Education. Specifically, the project will (a) provide definitions of proficiency levels for signed languages, (b) provide an elaboration of curricula that focus on these levels with specifications of signed language curricula for L2 learners; and (c) develop a sample assessment kit for signed language proficiency. Ultimately, it will enhance awareness and inclusion of European sign languages and Deaf communities in European society. The project is coordinated by the following: Dr. Lorraine Leeson, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland; Dr. Beppie van den Bogaerde, Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands; Dr. Tobias Haug, Interkantonale Hochschule für Heilpädagogik, Switzerland; Dr. Christian Rathmann, Universität Hamburg, Germany; This is the first time that the ECML has funded a signed language related project - and we are very excited about the possibilities that this programme allows for. • Medisigns - €52,500 - Leonardo da Vinci (LLP/LdV/TOI/2010/IRL-511)
  • Summary
    • This project represents a ground-breaking initiative that focuses on providing language and communication skills to Deaf people, interpreters, and those in the medical profes-sion. Sometimes it is not possible to get an interpreter in a healthcare setting, often leaving a Deaf person or the healthcare provider in a situation which potentially compromises the level of patient care being delivered. Potentially, this forces a Deaf patient to either wait until an interpreter becomes available or rely on a family member or friend to casu-ally interpret on their behalf. This is not ideal, especially in medical situations that are sensitive, confidential or private. From the perspective of a Deaf community and the project consortium, it is important to note that the provision of qualified interpreters, especially those trained in healthcare aspects, is not viewed as a luxury but as a fundamental human right to the access and provision of appropriate healthcare. Working with consor-tium leader, Interesource Group (Ireland) Limited,Trintiy College Dublin (Ireland), Heriot Watt University (Scotland), University of Stockholm (Sweden), University of Nicosia (Cypress) and the Turkish Federation of the Deaf (Turkey) developed content to support training for frontline medical staff regarding working with interpreters and Deaf community members, training for interpreters regarding working in medical con-texts, and training for Deaf community members regarding what to expect when they en-counter medical situations and have to engage with medical staff, mediated through in-terpreters. This is the first time that such an approach has been applied in Europe and this project has secured the support of (amongst others) the World Federation of the Deaf, the World Association of Sign Language Interpreters, the European Union of the Deaf and the European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters. In 2013, this project was awarded the prestigious European Language Label.

    • Hidden Histories: Intercultural Dialogue and Learning - €81,590 (510217-LLP-1-2010-1-UK-GRUNDTVIG-GMP)
  • Summary
    • The project aims to develop a range of strategies to encourage people who do not participate in social or civil society to engage in developing community histories. This project will use the expertise and experience of professionals working in the Lifelong Learning sectors, museums and archives, to work with communities of both place and interest to create and utilise community histories. This work will include working with individuals and groups to use existing archives; training in oral history and life writing to generate material for exhibitions and archives; reminiscence work; training for people to work as volunteers or in paid employment in archives; creating on-line archives. In order to meet the needs of Deaf community groups, in both Sussex and Ireland all work with the community will be supported by BSL and ISL interpretation. In addition, BSL and ISL summaries of website content will be provided to enhance accessibility. An outcome of this learning process will be to foster understanding for each other by facilitating intercultural exchange, by giving communities with different cultural and linguistic backgrounds the opportunity to communicate with and learn from each other. This work will be sustained through the generation of material that can be used with other groups of learners in the future, thus creating a valuable archive of hidden histories. The project will work with three target groups, as exemplars of communities within the EU, and will be reached through the extensive networks of project partners. The intended users include the Deaf community which has about 700k Deaf signed languages users in Europe. Following from European recommendations for the recognition of signed languages in member states (1988/1998/2003), we will work with this minority linguistic community to record their lives and identify and collect cultural artefacts. Other partners include rural communities in the UK and Finland who are socially and economically disadvantaged by geographic isolation, who also need to meet the challenge of rapid change in the rural economy and to exploit the potentialities of transition of population distribution between temporary/recreational living and permanent/occupational living within communities, that is evidently taking place in many parts of the EU. Finally, we will work with migrant communities, to capture and promote their experiences and perceptions of life in their new communities, and to record their cultural heritage. Engaging in learning will lead to the development of social capital and linguistic skills, and also promote a sense of belonging and place in the world. The consortium is led by the University of Sussex (UK). Partners are Trinity College Dublin, inspire - Verein (Austria) and Noema-CMI (Finland). • Summary
    • This project aimed to collate, for the first time, an electronic corpus of Irish Sign Language. The corpus currently contains data from 40 signers from across the Republic of Ireland. The data is being transcribed using ELAN (a programme developed by the Max Planx Institute, Nijmegan) and data has served as the starting point in analysing aspects of the grammar of Irish Sign Language as well as serving as data for cross linguistic analysis by linguists in Ireland and abroad. Data collected includes both elicited and non-elicited data, of which the elicited data is in line with that collected for other signed languages. This corpus represents one of the largest digital corpora of a European signed language and is the most detailed (in terms of annotation) worldwide. Sixteen peer-reviewed papers and presentations have resulted from the SOI corpus related work to date, and currently 3 PhD students and 1 M.Phil student are working on SOI corpus-related projects. A volume describing ISL, based heavily on corpus data, is due shortly (Leeson and Saeed). The corpus is also used in teaching in CDS and CLCS. Funding came from the following sources: Faculty of Arts and Social Science Benefaction Funds (2006-7) €1, 750; University of Dublin Emergency Research Funds (2003-4) c €7,728.00; Faculty of Arts and Social Science Benefaction Fund (2003-7) €2,000; Start Up Research Funds (2001) €12,482.00.
