Ryan Alberto Ó Giobúin Bio

Ryan Alberto Ó Giobúin hails from Camus in the heart of the Connemara Gaeltacht. He moved to Dublin in 2011 to pursue a degree in Sociology and Social Policy at Trinity College Dublin, and was elected a Scholar in the discipline in 2013. He is currently submitting his PhD research (Department of Sociology, Trinity College Dublin) on the development and causes of educational inequalities, with particular focus on the effect of the Great Recession on child outcomes, and the negative repercussions of poverty on child development. He is also a quantitative researcher on the Safe Learning Study, an intervention study conducted by the School of Education at University College Dublin, which aims to improve the educational and gender-equality outcomes of children in rural Sierra Leone.

Outside of academia, Ryan has also been active in the not-for-profit sector, having been a charity board member, and is the acting Alumni Representative on the Scholars’ Committee.

Ryan is keen to address not only the learning gaps that have emerged during pandemic school lockdowns, but indeed the wider, deep-set issue of educational inequality at many levels across Irish society. In like manner, he is advocating for evidence-informed policy in all areas of pressing concern, including housing and the environment, intent on raising, improving and consolidating our position in Europe as hosting an inclusive society for all.

As a nation, Ryan believes we are on the cusp of an opportunity to redress these inequalities and gaps through advocacy that is based on competent comparative research and policy.
