Research Expertise
My research is on using technology innovatively to support learning. I focus on the human-centered rather than the technology-driven aspect of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL). I study learning technologies and learners and investigate theories and practices to understand how learners behave. I then design, implement and evaluate innovative technology to support and enhance an engaged learning environment " pushing boundaries of established practices. Since joining Trinity, I have secured €1.5m as a PI - mainly internationally or in collaboration with international research colleagues - and have become an internationally recognised leading researcher, particularly in the area of mobile learning. A small selection of my work in mobile learning - which has been a focus since 2002 - includes: working with international authorities to develop a definition of mobile, now widely accepted (1160 citations since 2009). With colleagues, I articulated the first mobile learning classification model that includes both educational and functional analysis (551 citations since 2006) and published one of the first studies on using mobiles in classrooms to support student/lecturer interaction (438 citations since 2006). I have co-authored 18 peer-reviewed publications and completed my PhD on using mobile phones to support collaboration and creativity. Since 2010, a strand of my research has focused on technologies to support children with autism, which has attracted EU research funding, generated media interest and resulted in multiple citations. My research centres on two approaches: adaptive learning system to support carers teaching social skills to children with autism, and whole body gestural control games which allow children collaborate within 3D virtual spaces. I am currently investigating the use of motion detection and tracking technology to help early detection of motor skills development issues in children, switching the purpose of the technology from remedial intervention to early detection. For this research, I secured three years" Enterprise Ireland funding.

TitleShare.TEC: SHAring digital REsources in the Teaching Education CommunitySummaryTeacher Education (TE) is a strategic field for Europe's knowledge society and is undergoing rapid evolution. Share.TEC supports this process by creating a digital environment that fosters access, retrieval and reuse of resources for TE across Europe. The underlying vision is that digital resources are vehicles of educational innovation which can help build bridges among the different cultures of the member states. The Share.TEC system will be an extendible federated aggregation of resources, providing access both to the partners' own content and to other TE repositories. This is made possible by a metadata migration process featuring semantic, linguistic and cultural interoperability. The intended users of the system will be teacher educators, teachers engaged in self-guided learning, and developers and publishers of digital resources for TE. Share.TEC will be adaptive to the specific needs of these users and take into account their professional profiles through an ontology-based approach designed to capture individual differences. Share.TEC will cover both professionally-developed, commercially-distributed content and open resources created by users, proposing an innovative model for managing their coexistence in a sustainable fashion. Efficient brokerage will be offered between federated TE resources and user demand, which is strongly influenced by a variety of personal, curricular, cultural and national factors. To improve the matching mechanism, Share.TEC will integrate a folksonomy based approach and personalisation functions such as user history. Since educational resources are typically rooted in local cultures, the project will have a strong focus on cross-cultural aspects so that users can benefit from contents developed in external contexts. User involvement will be an essential feature of Share.TEC and accordingly the project will establish a network of user communities that will continue beyond project completion, thus strengthening sustainability.Funding AgencyECDate From2008Date To2011

TitleEDUWORKS: Crossing borders in the comprehensive investigation of labour market matching processes: An EU-wide, trans-disciplinary, multilevel and science-practice-bridging training networkSummaryThe objective of EDUWORKS is to train talented early-stage researchers in the socio-economic and psychological dynamics of the labour supply and demand matching processes at aggregated and disaggregated levels. EDUWORKS brings together researchers from several academic disciplines. namely: Labour Economics, Sociology of Occupations, HRM, Lifelong Learning. Increasing segments of the demand side and the supply side of the labour market are digitized, ranging from job sites and cv's at Facebook and Linkedin to extensive databases with job descriptions and related skills demands. These developments have led to Knowledge Management and educational challenges in these matching processes. Specifically, EDUWORKS will focus on matching processes at three levels and on one overarching topic: - Individual level fit between job demands - persons' abilities - Meso-level employers' demands for occupational skills versus occupational dynamics - European and national level labour supply and demand matches and mismatches - Knowledge Management for supply and demand matchesFunding AgencyECDate From2013Date To2017

TitleEduTxt: An Exploration of the Use of Mobile Phones in Formal Educational ContextsSummaryEdu Txt proposes to use mobile telephones, in particular SMS, in conjunction with other communication tools such as email and wiki technology, to increase interaction during the teaching/learning process while in class as well as outside class. In particular this project will focus on three main interactions for learning: student-lecturer; student-student; student-content. This project is grounded on a Constructivist paradigm and advocates for a Social Constructivist approach in which communication, social interactions and tools are recognised as paramount in the learning process. Furthermore, it incorporates collaborative strategies to facilitate the development of higher order skills in the attempt to engage learners in knowledge construction. The project will deliver a software system that will enhance access to lecturers, peers and content via SMS text message based communication supported by a dedicated message processing server. This server will support various types of interactions as outlined above. All interaction will be stored and will be accessible at a later stage. Questions that may have been asked and answered during a lecture are available to students at a later stage for review. This data will also be available for research in education that will be used to direct the development of the platform.Funding AgencyCentre for Learning Technology (CLT)Date From2005Date To2006

TitleMOTILL: Mobile Technologies in Lifelong Learning: Best PracticesSummaryThe widespread diffusion of mobile technologies in all countries of the EU gives an opportunity to develop policies addressed towards participation and social inclusion, considering that the use of mobile devices transcends age, social status, economic level, gender and ethnic origins. Despite the scientific community has highlighted that mobile learning could be a suitable methodology to support LLL, national policies have not yet taken any significant steps to integrate LLL and mobile technologies, this project will support this goal. The main outputs of the project will concern activities related to collecting, organizing and analyzing new pedagogical approaches that exploit mobile technologies for LLL. In particular, the project envisages the following outputs: . a Web Portal aimed at supporting knowledge construction and sharing of common experiences; . an online scientific annotated review database that will bring together projects, key experiences and scholarly studies on LLL experiences based on mobile technologies; . an online collection of best practices on national m-learning projects examined from different points of view, to determine their impacts on participation and social inclusion policies; . project reports, regarding methodological aspects, national policies, and technical results about the use of mobile technologies in LLL initiatives. The results of the project will be: . an up-to-date survey on the use of mobile technologies in learning and training projects in the partners' countries; . a methodological framework to analyze best practices in this context. This framework will identify the key factors and the main indicators, and will establish the principal criteria for constructing the evaluation grid; . an open space for public discussions, involving public and private institutions, research centres, educators, and trainers, on the impact of Information Society Technologies on the future of LLL. The project will involve researchers and national/local agencies in the definition of strategic plans, increasing their awareness about the possible impacts of mobile technologies on LLL, and provide educators with the technological / methodological scaffolding necessary to implement these policies. At long-term the MOTILL project should improve the rate of people involved in training programs.Funding AgencyECDate From2009Date To2010

TitleEvaluation of the Kilkenny Information Age School InitiativeSummaryIn 1997 Kilkenny were runners up in the Information Age Towns Competition which was sponsored by Telecom Eireann (now Eircom). The prize fund of £1,000,000 was awarded to Kilkenny. As a result Kilkenny Information Age Ltd. was established in order to position Kilkenny at the forefront of ICT developments and to create an awareness and competency whereby people of all ages and from all social groupings can benefit from the goals of the information age society. In February 1999, the Department of Education and Science through NCTE and Kilkenny Information Age Ltd. formed a partnership to encourage the use and evaluation of ICT in Education. There are eight projects in total: 10 primary, 6 secondary and 3 special schools in the Kilkenny city area are participating in at least one of these projects. This project involved the evaluation of the Kilkenny Information Age School Initiative. Within this context, I developed an ICT mediated formative approach to enable all the participants (evaluators and evalutees) to collectively construct knowledge in regards to the project itself, as well as the evaluation process in which they were immersed. I also co-authored the final report.Funding AgencyNCTE and Kilkenny Information Age Ltd.Date From2000Date To2001

TitleNew Possibilities For Print Media And Packaging - Combining Print With DigitalSummaryThe goal of this Action is to promote discussion on the benefits that may be achieved from novel combinations of print and digital. It will also be used to enhance innovations that will make use of the benefits of both print and electronic media as well as innovations where print and electronic media are combined. Several examples exist where successful combinations have been achieved e.g. through the use of image recognition, augmented reality or printed electronics to bring interactivity into fiber based products. To give the forest industry a competitive edge this Action will focus on new innovations by combining knowledge of the end users with most recent technological achievements. New models of ongoing change in social interaction and in the cultural products of paper and electronic media will be elaborated and proposed. The results will promote critical and theoretical discussion on the changing meanings of contemporary media culture. The Action will explore new business opportunities for the fiber based products and the value chains of print media and packaging through novel, innovative uses. It will also serve as a channel for communication between industry and academia, thus contributing to the development of new commercial applications.Funding AgencyECDate From2012Date To2016

TitleTRUST-E: Teaching and Research in a Ubiquitous SecureSummaryIn everyday life young and old are communicating and collaborating using technology in an increasingly diverse number of ways. Research to date has investigated the use of some of these technologies to provide access to anytime/anywhere lifelong-learning while building upon developments in learning theory. Much of these implementations have focussed on providing these facilities through centralised servers accessed by authenticated clients from a small set of fixed locations. We believe ubiquitous learning requires ubiquitous computing. The project will develop a ubiquitous learning platform accessible by all modern and mobile technologies. The pedagogical underpinning of the environment will be based upon a collaborative constructionist paradigm. This platform will be flexible and scalable providing a modular framework for a variety of learning scenarios. Specifically it will allow for communication, collaboration, access to content and the interactive creation of knowledge from a variety of fixed and mobile computational devices. Appropriate interfaces and interaction models will be developed. Central to the feasibility of such an environment is a communications infrastructure that is adaptable. More problematically the environment must facilitate meaningful communication between users who may not have any prior knowledge of each other - i.e. the system must support a rich interpretation of the idea of trust in an ad-hoc mobile ubiquitous environment.Funding AgencyHigher Education AuthorityDate From2004Date To2007

TitleTrinity TEL (Technology Enhanced Learning) Outreach ProgrammeSummaryI was the co-founder and co-coordinator for this project. Within the context of this initiative, we designed and implemented a successful model for a TEL outreach programme and developed substantial expertise and know-how in the area. The knowledge and experience acquired during this project lead to the successful funding and creation of the Bridge to College (B2C) programme which is founded in the same principles. The TEL Outreach Programme is an educational project, which gives senior cycle students (4th-5th year students) in local disadvantaged schools the opportunity to work on creative projects using state of the art digital technology. The two primary aims of the project are: 1. To break down barriers and increase the numbers of students from disadvantaged communities who go on to third level education. 2. To increase young peoples' active engagement in technical projects. The project gives its participants the opportunity to become designers, creators and confident users, not just passive consumers, of digital technology. For example instead of just playing computer games the students of the clubhouse actually build their own games.Funding AgencySupported by Microsoft, Deloitte, o2 Ireland, Dept. TitleLogic, Programming, and Robotics for Non-Technical StudentsSummaryThis project is aimed at the design, development, and implementation of a holistic teaching and learning module for basic programming and robotics principles aimed at non technical students. The course adopts a constructivist, problem based, learning approach and it adopts a modified version of Kolb's experiential learning cycle which encourages the learner to go through a cycle of formulating a design, implementing that design, getting that design executed in the physical world through the means of a robot, and then reflecting upon the execution of that implementation. The module incorporates video clips to illustrate both the problem solving process and sample solutions. The clips are annotated both with text and graphical indicators of transitions within the Kolb cycle. The web site contains a set of progressively more sophisticated problems and attempting to solve these, should lead learners to gain understanding of concepts concerning programming, logic and robotics. The robotics technology used is the Lego Mindstorms Programmable Brick which was designed at the Epistemology and Learning Group at the MIT Media Lab. The brick can control a number of motors and sensors can be attached which respond to touch and light. Mindstroms allows devices to be built which can interact with their environment. This provides a technological base to be used in the learning approach followed by this course.Funding AgencyNational Development Plan (NDP)Date From2002Date To2003
