Welcome to TR061 Chemical Sciences
(Chemistry, Chemistry with Molecular Modelling, Chemistry with Biosciences, Medicinal Chemistry, Nanoscience)
What is Chemical Sciences?
Chemistry is a creative and central science, that deals with challenges that span the physical and life sciences. It is found and used everywhere, from the air we breathe to the products we use. It is essential to the creation of the technology around us, from the coffee we drink to the smartphone in our pockets, and from the aeroplanes in the sky to advancements in medical health. A chemistry-based qualification provides students with the relevant skills and knowledge to open doors in research, education, industry, finance and more. As well as practical knowledge of the subject, chemistry students develop many other transferable skills that are valued by both employers and the wider community. These range from critical thinking and problem-solving to communication and creativity. Nobody knows what the jobs of the future will look like, but chemists will be needed to tackle problems in human health, sustainable energy, technology, food management and the environment.
Academics at the School of Chemistry are at the forefront of cutting-edge research and are contributing to ground-breaking advances that benefit society. These include nanotechnology, drug delivery, energy storage and computational modelling. Research work at the School of Chemistry is highly interdisciplinary and involves collaboration with universities and industry, in Ireland and abroad. In Trinity’s Chemical Sciences stream, you will access this knowledge while you study. Our unique programme covers the fundamentals of chemistry in the first two years and progresses to more advanced topics as you specialise. Choices include Medicinal chemistry, Nanoscience and Chemistry with/without an emphasis on molecular modelling. This stream also offers students the opportunity to gain international experience, giving them the choice to pursue their final-year research projects in Trinity or abroad.
If you want to understand the workings of the world around you, then chemistry is for you!
Find out more about TR061 below.
The School of Chemistry at Trinity is ranked number 1 in Ireland and in the top 100 worldwide (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2015). Our Chemistry degree is designed to provide you with the practical and analytical skills needed for a career in research and industry. Many of the School’s academic staff carry out research at the cutting edge of their fields in areas as diverse as nanoscience, energy and drug design. In 4th year, you will have the opportunity to undertake a significant research project either in the School or abroad at one of the many third-level/research institutes with which the School has agreements.
Following foundation- and core-level modules in 1st and 2nd year chosen from a number of science subjects (e.g. physics or biology) along with chemistry and mathematics, you will expand your knowledge of chemistry in 3rd and 4th year, taking more advanced modules in organic, inorganic and physical chemistry. In 4th year, you will carry out an extensive research project, either in one of the research labs in Trinity or abroad. Graduates often cite this as the most memorable and rewarding part of their undergraduate degree. You will have the opportunity to study the fundamentals of modern chemistry, whilst developing your interests in specific topics such as bio-inorganic/organic chemistry, solid-state materials, and interfacial and environmental chemistry.
The School of Chemistry has exchange agreements with a large number of universities and research institutes where students may carry out their final-year research projects, in places such as Vienna, Berlin, Bologna, Toulouse, and Utrecht, North America and Australia. A limited number of places are also available in China. The areas of research are wide-ranging, including cancer chemotherapy and DNA chemistry, device fabrication and materials processing, homogeneous catalysis, supramolecular chemistry and computational chemistry. Between 3rd and 4th year, some students also take a year-long internship in a pharmaceutical
company to enhance their knowledge of chemistry and their practical skills.
A chemistry degree combines specialist practical training with analytical, problem-solving and presentation skills and is excellent preparation for graduates considering a diverse range of career paths. Trinity’s chemistry graduates are highly sought after by the chemical and pharmaceutical industries and graduates have worked in companies such as Henkel, Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline and Bristol Meyers Squib. Patent offices, government advisory and information services, libraries, public analytical laboratories, schools and third-level institutes also employ our chemists. Our graduates can also pursue postgraduate degrees either in the School of Chemistry or in other world-class research institutes. Historically, chemistry graduates have been in demand in a wide range of non-scientific fields including the financial sector.
