Research Boost Programme 2024

Fostering and growing research talent

Trinity’s Research Charter commits the University to a set of core principles that are central to our research philosophy. The Charter’s goals aim to enable researchers to work on their own ideas and to excel at what they do. In early 2024, the Higher Education Authority made additional funding available to the third level sector to support the upgrade and purchase of research equipment. Trinity received a total of €2,613,549. This funding was distributed by way of a competitive internal funding call (Stream 1 – HEREG). At the same time, a separate amount of funding was made available for an internal research boost programme aimed at supporting more general research. The total funding available for this programme was €500,000 (Stream 2 – Boost).

In total, across both streams, 296 applications were received with a total ask of €11,919,248. This highlights the ongoing demand in the sector for increased supports for research infrastructure and activity. Out of 123 applications to Stream 1 – HEREG, 62 were funded. Out of 173 applications to Stream 2 – Boost 52 applications were funded. The list of funded projects in both streams is below.

A programme of this nature, which was created with the intention to provide funding to researchers as quickly as possible, could only work with the support of the wider research community in Trinity. We are very grateful to the reviewers who so graciously gave of their time and expertise at a busy time of year, the Research Committee for its support of the programme, and colleagues in Finance who have assisted with the administration of the awards.
