Professor Patrick Prendergast

Biography
Patrick Prendergast, BA, BAI, PhD, ScD, C.Eng, FIEI, FIAE, FREng, MRIA, SFTCD is an Honorary Principal Investigator in the Trinity Centre for Biomedical Engineering (TCBE). Together with colleagues from Engineering, Medicine and Dentistry, he led the application to establish the TCBE under the Programme for Research in Third-level Institutions (PRTLI). He was the inaugural Director from 2003 to 2008. Dr Prendergast was Professor of Bio-Engineering from 2007 until his appointment as President/Provost required him to relinquish his professorship in 2011.
In 2011 he was appointed the 44th President & Provost of Trinity College Dublin and held office for a 10-year term. Prior positions in university administration were Chief Academic Officer & Vice-Provost (2008-2011), and Dean of Graduate Studies (2004-2007). On returning to the faculty in 2021, he was appointed as Research Professor in the University.
Prior to working in TCD he held post-doctoral positions in Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute, Bologna and the University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands, where he worked with Prof.dr.ir. Rik Huiskes.
On a sabbatical year 2001-2002 he was Visiting Professor, Institute of Fundamental Technological Research, Poland and Senior Research Fellow, Koiter Institute, Technical University of Delft and the Department of Orthopaedics of Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He also did a sabbatical year at the Institute of Bioengineering of UPC, Barcelona, Spain in 2007-2008 working with Professor Josep Planell.
His engineering work is in biomechanics, implant analysis and design, and mechanobiology of skeletal tissues. For several decades his publications have appeared in the Elsevier World's Top 2% Scientists Ranking.
