- Summary
- The main objective of this project is to develop new quantum dot-liquid crystal conjugates and to demonstrate their potential as materials for photonic and flat-panel display applications. The work will include: i) synthesis of II-VI quantum dots (QDs), ii) conjugation of QDs and liquid crystals, iii) photo-physical characterisation of these nanocomposites and their electro-optical studies. The project is interdisciplinary by nature and will involve experts from two different departments (Electronic & Electrical Engineering and Chemistry), to assure its successful realisation.

- The main objective of this project is to develop a new design and process for fabrication of horizontal liquid crystal micro-cells build on Si substrate and to demonstrate their utility as micro-polarizers for photonic applications. The work will include: the fabrication of horizontal liquid crystal micro-cells, electro-optical characterisation of these cells, design and fabrication of a prototype of a new micro-polarizer for optical communications. - Design, fabrication and investigation of Si based composite photonic materials
- Summary
- A systematic experimental and theoretical approach will be undertaken in the investigation of optical properties of Si based photonic materials. In particular, the characteristic matrix method will be applied for the calculation of photonic band gaps (PBGs) for 1D Si photonic crystals (PCs). The results of these calculations will be verified by FTIR microscopy measurements. We are also going to investigate a wide range of properties of composite materials fabricated by the infiltration of different compounds (magnetic particles, polymers, liquid crystals and luminescent materials) into porous and grooved silicon matrices. Polarised micro-Raman spectroscopy will be applied in the investigation of localised structure in anisotropically nanostructured silicon which exhibits unusual non-linear optical properties.

The work will include: the fabrication of reach through porous silicon, preparation of xerogel- and glass- on porous silicon fibres, photo-physical characterisation of the materials, design and fabrication of a prototype of a new microcylindrical emitting device. - 10. Chemical bonding of metallorganics to the silicon surface
- Summary
- New metallorganic composites will be developed on crystalline or porous silicon surfaces. These materials are expected to have a wide range of applications in nano-technology and electronics. The project consists of :- (i) Fabrication and investigation of Cl-, HO-, ferrocenyl and Cp- modified Si-surfaces. (ii) Preparation and characterisation of metallasiloxane layers on crystalline silicon. (iii) Characterisation of metallorganic layers on Si by FTIR and micro-Raman spectroscopy, XPS and CPD measurements. (iv) Synthesis of Cp- metal derivatives, bound to the crystalline Si-surface. (v) Preparation and investigation of metallorganic composites with porous silicon. (In collaboration with Dr. A. Moore)
