Biography
Darina Murray is a Professor in Mechanical Engineering at Trinity College Dublin. She graduated from University College Dublin with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering in 1981 and 1983 respectively. She worked in the Electricity Supply Board (now ESB International)for 2 years before joined the academic staff of Trinity College, where in 1989 she completed her doctorate on the subject of gas-particle heat transfer in cross flow. Professor Murray has led many research projects, with EU, Enterprise Ireland, IRC and SFI funding, on topics such as two-phase flow and heat transfer, convective heat transfer measurements, measurement of blood perfusion, characterisation of compact heat exchangers and exhaust gas sensors. She is the author of around 150 publications in refereed journals and international conference proceedings. She has served on the scientific committees of 10 international conferences and has refereed papers for 21 international journals. She is the Irish representative (and past secretary) on the EU Eurotherm committee, which promotes and fosters European co-operation in thermal sciences and heat transfer. She was made a Fellow of Trinity College in 1996. The core focus of her research work is the characterisation of convective heat transfer by coupled heat transfer and fluid flow measurements. Her current research interests include impinging jet flow and heat transfer, natural convection and heat transfer enhancement in bubbly flows.

Description
The focus of my research work is the characterisation of convective heat transfer mechanisms in single and two phase flows, which is core to thermal energy conversion processes as well as to the cooling of electronics systems and manufacturing processes. This is achieved mainly through the use of coupled local and time-resolved heat transfer and fluid flow measurements, using advanced measurement techniques such as hot film anemometry, infrared thermography, high speed imaging and particle image velocimetry. My current research interests include impinging jet flow and heat transfer, natural convection and heat transfer enhancement in bubbly flows.Projects

- Synthetic air jets: A study of convective cooling in thermal management applications
- Summary
- To enhance the cooling performance of impinging synthetic air jets a better understanding of the temporal nature of the flow velocity and heat flux is required. This research will measure the heat transfer at various locations along the impingement surface and correlate this with measurements of the local flow velocity and temperature. Of particular interest are the thermal gradients in the jet flow due to vortices and the influence that "energy separation" has on the local and area averaged heat transfer.

- Summary
- Consultation with the interdisciplinary research teams in the CTVR has revealed that a synthetic miniature jet electronics cooler has huge potential for the thermal management of lasers which will directly benefit the Irish photonics industry. Thermal hardware will be developed that incorporates an array of miniature impinging synthetic jets to cool electronic packages. The new thermal package is an economical, compact, efficient and reliable replacement for conventional rotary fan-based cooling units. Commercial potential for the novel cooling system is immense considering that an escalating number of electronic systems are becoming thermally limited.
