- Distributing our Water Resources: Utilising Integrated, Smart and low-Carbon Energy (Dŵr Uisce)
- Summary
- There is significant scope to improve the energy efficiency of the distribution of water resources in Ireland and Wales. The Dŵr Uisce project aims to quantify and demonstrate this scope using integrated smart and low-carbon technology. Our demonstration will be of an integrated approach, as no one technology can solve the water-energy challenge. It will be smart in order to optimise potential savings, and will be low-carbon by developing and deploying technologies with a quick carbon payback. The project will deliver improved efficiency of the water-energy nexus, benefitting two key stakeholders groups: water companies (suppliers) and water consumers (end-users).

- TRADEIT: Traditional Food: Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Technology
- Summary
- The TRADEIT project is a multidisciplinary, multi-sectorial collaborative project supporting a Network of Traditional Food SMEs and Food Researchers in the areas of Collaboration, Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Knowledge and Technology Transfer to increase the competitiveness and inter-regional advantage of Traditional Food Producing SMEs. This will be achieved through focused regional coordination and support activities and events facilitated by the establishment of nine Regional Traditional Food Knowledge and Technology Transfer Hubs. Each Hub will host a TRADEIT stakeholder sub-network (defined by region, language and/or food group), the members of which will benefit from a suite of knowledge and technology offerings over the course of the project. Food researchers from across Europe will be provided with the opportunity to attend the TRADEIT Entrepreneurial Summer School in which an entrepreneurial skillset will be developed to facilitate future R&D&I Enterprise and Commercialisation activities. The regional focus of the project will be further developed in the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda which will promote regional R&D&I for pan-European benefit. The TRADEIT project aligns with, and contributes to, the goals and objective of a number of EU Initiatives, Strategies and Policies including Europe 2020 the Innovation Union Flagship Initiative, Horizon 2020, Cohesion Policy in particular Smart Specialisation Innovating for Sustainable Growth: a Bio-economy for Europe and Food Law Regulation

- Towards a More Sustainable System of Water Supply in Ireland and Wales: Exploring Opportunities for Hydropower in Break Pressure Tanks (Hydro-BPT)
- Summary
- This project will advance the sustainability of the process of water supply in Ireland and Wales by exploiting the potential for energy recovery that exists at Break Pressure Tanks (BPTs). Water supply is a core service on which civilised society depends and it involves considerable energy consumption and CO2 emissions (water treatment, pumping and monitoring). Treated water is commonly supplied from a central storage reservoir by gravity throughout a catchment and this water must be supplied within satisfactory pressure bands. When the pressure in water flow becomes too high a BPT is commonly installed in the network, whereby the pressure, kinetic & potential energy within the flow is dissipated to the atmosphere. This common feature of water supply networks presents an opportunity to recover this energy wastage by using micro-hydropower technology to transform it into electricity without interfering in the water supply service. The key objectives of this project comprise: 1. Determining the technical/economic feasibility of applying Hydro-BPTs to water infrastructure: using experimental models the energy recoverable from BPTs will be assessed/demonstrated 2. Determining the environmental impact of this new technology: assessments will be made in terms of the CO2 emissions saving, environmental impacts, life cycle analysis 3. A feasibility study for the application of Hydro-BPTs in existing Irish/Welsh BPTs: information on the existing BPTs will be gathered in a GIS database which will be used to demonstrate the untapped energy potential in water supply networks in Ireland/Wales 4. An exploration of the forms of collaboration among the key stakeholders and development of a business model: this section of the project will develop guidelines for the widespread implementation of this technology by industry

- Made in Ireland II - Benchmarking Irish SME Practice and Performance
- Summary
- The competitiveness of manufacturing SMEs remains an important issue for companies, for support agencies and for the Irish economy as a whole. The 2005-6 Global Competitiveness Report ranked Ireland 26th, having moved up 4 places since 2004. But is this ranking indicative of the current state of the competitiveness of Irish SMEs and how has this state changed since 2001? These questions are addressed in this study. Over the period 2003-2005, data were collected from a total of 144 manufacturing companies assisted by Enterprise Ireland. The study compares these data with the data collected in the period 1997-2000 from the 151 similar companies which formed the basis of the first Made in Ireland report.
