Biography
My specific expertise is in experimental and computational thermal sciences. I have 30 years experience in heat transfer, fluid mechanics and applied energy research in Ireland, France, Canada and parts of Africa. I am the author of over 100 peer reviewed journal papers. Also author of many technical reports for industry, business and professional organisations and 5 patents. In-line with national and global energy priorities, myself and my team perform research that specifically targets the critical need for improved energy efficiency of thermal energy transport and conversion technologies as well as developing novel clean energy devices. The research underpins the rational use of energy with regard to the reduction of energy use as well as clean generation with their consequent reduction of green house gas emissions. To achieve this, the research focuses on both the fundamental science of enhanced heat transfer as well as innovative systems level engineering of clean technologies for biomass, geothermal, solar thermal, energy storage and waste heat recovery applications.Currently, my research focusses on electronics cooling and energy management, dealing with the escalating power densities and energy demand of compute systems in HPC, data centres and the edge.

- The Mechanisms of Heat Transfer during Nucleate Pool Boiling
- Summary
- A Direct Numerical Simulation of bubble growth on a heated surface will be performed. The physical model will incorporate important aspects of boiling, such as thermocapillary convection, that have previously been ignored. The efficacy and accuracy of the physical model and solution technique will be assured by validation with new bubble growth measurements with spatially and temporally resolved surface measurements in the vicinity of the bubbles. The intricate coupling between the bubble growth and the mechanisms responsible for heat removal during boiling will be elucidated for different boiling conditions including terrestrial and microgravity environments.

- Variable Conductance Heat Pipe
- Summary
- Heat Pipes (HP) are efficient, low cost and simple phase change heat transfer devices. Recently they have been implemented in commercial applications to transfer heat from a centralized source and disperse it for cooling and heating applications alike. In addition to the advantages of the HP, the Variable Conductance Heat Pipe (VCHP) incorporates a non-condensable gas into the pipe to control the amount of heat that can be transferred through it.

- Environmentally Green Medium Temperature Heat Pipes
- Summary
- Environmentally sound non-toxic heat pipes that operate in the temperature range of 200 degC to 500 degC are not commercially available. An experimental programme has been initiated whereby working fluid-wick-container combinations are being explored and heat pipes are being manufactured and tested for use in this temperature range.

In particular, this investigation targets the effect of the surface tension driven flow on the heat transfer enhancement in the vicinity of the bubble. The influence of gravity on the heat transfer is also being investigated.

- Summary
- Thermal hardware will be developed that incorporates an array of micro impinging synthetic jets to cool electronic packages. The new thermal package is an economical, compact, efficient and reliable replacement for conventional rotary fan-based cooling units. Commercial potential for the novel cooling system is immense considering that an escalating number of electronic systems are becoming thermally limited.

- A novel device to control in situ the thermal gelation and concentration of cell-seeded hydrogels
- Summary
- It is believed that injuries to cartilage predispose a person to osteoarthritis in later life and eventually to a requirement for joint replacement surgery. Injectable chondrocyte-seeded hydrogels can potentially be used to fill cartilage defects with a functional repair tissue. Ensuring that the hydrogel has the appropriate mechanical properties in situ (e.g. stiffness, permeability, porosity) is critical for successful repair. The objective of this project is to develop a clinical device capable of controlling the hydrogel concentration and the rate of cooling during gelation in situ, which can be used to alter the depth dependant mechanical properties of the construct.
