Professor Linda Hogan and Dr. Marta Lasek-Markey, both researchers with ADAPT, recently appeared on the Brain for Business podcast to discuss their paper, ‘Towards a Human Rights-Based Approach to Ethical AI Governance in Europe’.
The conversation explored ethical challenges associated with AI, the role of human rights in AI governance, and the influence of European values on AI regulation. They also examined more lenient approaches adopted in other jurisdictions.
Brain for Business, launched in 2020, translates insights from academic research in brain, behavioural, and organisational sciences for a business, organisational, and general audience. With over 100 episodes, the podcast has featured experts from leading institutions, including Harvard University, INSEAD, the World Health Organisation and many others.
During the discussion, Hogan and Lasek-Markey highlighted the growing presence of AI in digital systems and argued that human rights frameworks serve as a common denominator between law and ethics in AI governance. They explored how AI’s opportunities can be maximised without stifling innovation.
An ethicist and Professor of Ecumenics at the School of Religion, Theology, and Peace Studies, Professor Hogan’s primary research interests lie in inter-cultural and inter-religious ethics, social and political ethics, human rights, and gender studies. Dr. Lasek-Markey, a Postdoctoral researcher at ADAPT, contributes significantly to AI-driven digital content research.
The paper discussed in the interview is open access and available here.
