'The Flag that Does Not Exist - Yet? Imagining a New Symbol in Northern Ireland' has been published in The Political Quarterly. The article is a manifesto for a new flag in Northern Ireland, outlining the growing case for a new, shared symbol and suggesting principles for its creation. It argues that the role of flags in other places (such as Cornwall, Denmark, and South Africa), show how a new symbol could encourage identification with place, a shared future, and civic pride. ‘Peace, temporality and generations: how young people make sense of Northern Ireland’s long peace process’ is co-authored with Sarah Wallace and is based on Sarah’s PhD research, completed in the School of Religion, Theology, and Peace Studies in 2023. The article examines the role of time in people’s understandings of peace, and contains vivid and wide-ranging interview material from 27 young people born around the time of the Good Friday Agreement. It advances the sociology of peace by contributing to the understanding of long-term peace and how peacebuilding is affected by generational change. The article is free to read here.
