Two new Pro-Chancellors have been inaugurated in Trinity, just in time for the upcoming commencements season, when hundreds of students will graduate from the university.

The new Pro-Chancellors, Ms Rachel Hussey and Prof. Jürgen Barkhoff, were inaugurated at separate ceremonies in the Provost’s House attended by their families, friends and colleagues.

There are, at present, six Pro-Chancellors in Trinity and their role includes, in particular, acting on behalf of the Chancellor, Dr Mary McAleese, when she is absent from commencement ceremonies.

Becoming a Pro-Chancellor is considered to be the highest accolade the University can bestow, and the role is reserved for the most distinguished graduates and academic members of staff who have made exceptional contributions to Trinity or to society over the course of their career.

Speaking about the new Pro-Chancellors, Linda said, “Rachel and Jürgen are truly exceptional people who bring Trinity’s values to life in all that they do. Rachel is a leading advocate for gender diversity in the legal profession and beyond, and Jürgen - with his deep commitment to education and the humanities - has played a central role in Trinity since he joined us in 1995. I am so proud that they have agreed to take up these positions and know that our students and staff will be greatly inspired by them during their tenure.’
