How to Apply
Admissions Procedures
The School of Physics runs graduate programmes for PhD and MSc degrees by research only, with two starting dates in each year: 01 September and 01 March. The majority of students start in September. More details and all the relevant deadlines can be found on the College Graduate Studies web page for prospective students. All students register on either the MSc or PhD register. PhD students must complete a Continuation Report in their second year in the School. This consists of a small dissertation (about 30 pages) on the research already done and on a proposed plan for the remainder of the PhD. Some coursework is also required. Normally a PhD degree takes approximately four years to complete.
The School accepts applications from talented and hardworking candidates all year round. The minimum entry to our postgraduate program is a 2.1 honors degree from an Irish university or equivalent. Moreover the student should be fluent in the English language. All students are assigned to a single principal supervisor, who has the role of academic guide and mentor. The College Graduate Studies Office provides more details on general College admission.
The vast majority of our students are supported by national or international funding bodies, providing both College fees and an annual stipend. These are usually associated with specific research projects, and potential candidates are recommended to get in touch with their potential supervisors before starting any application process. Some other resources provide awards for individuals, and every candidate for a graduate position in the School is eligible to apply. For truly exceptional candidates the School of Physics can provide financial support. These positions are extremely competitive and only a few awards are made every year.
Further information on awards is provided by the College Graduate Studies Office.
What do you need to do now?
We strongly recommend that before you submit a formal application to the College, you get approval from your potential supervisor. You have now two options:
- Visit our Opportunities page, where current vacancies are advertised, identify a project you are interested in and get in touch directly with your potential supervisor by e-mail. It is a good idea to provide a full CV and explain why you want to come to Trinity and why you believe you are the right candidate for the PhD work you wish to apply for.
- Contact a potential supervisor directly for information on any positions they may have available. Links to the various research groups are available here.
