Biography

Professor Tom Noone, Assistant Professor in General Nursing is a Registered General Nurse (RGN), Dr Noone worked as a staff nurse in acute medical, surgical nursing at UHG and later at the Haematology/Oncology and National Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, St James's hospital, Dublin. He is a Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) and worked as a staff nurse and taught at St Patrick's hospital, Dublin. He is a Registered Nurse Tutor (RNT) and completed a BNS RNT with Honours at UCD Dublin. He worked as a Registered Nurse Tutor at St James's hospital, Dublin where he taught general nursing for over ten years. He was educational facilitator and taught components of the Post Graduate Diploma in Peri-operative nursing at St James's Hospital, Dublin. He earned a Diploma in human anatomy and a Diploma in applied physiology form the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). Dr Noone completed a Master's in Medical Science (Nursing) with Honours at UCD Dublin. He was one of the first male nurses to complete RGN training in Ireland and was the first male nurse in the Republic of Ireland to obtain a Masters Degree in Nursing. He received an MA from Trinity College Dublin and completed a PhD in Education at the School of Education, Trinity College Dublin. Dr Noone was appointed course coordinator in 2001 for the Diploma in Nursing at Trinity College Dublin and coordinated the disciplines of General, Psychiatric and Intellectual Disability nursing across six affiliated Health Service Providers. He has coordinated MSc courses and the undergraduate B.Sc. (Hons) degree in nursing. He has established experience as a Clinical Health Science Assessor for students undertaking the M.Sc. in Clinical Health Science Education. He lectures in pain management, neurological nursing, respiratory nursing, clinical nursing skills, and chronic illness. He is module leader for Principles of Adult Nursing (across all care settings) and Facilitation of Learning in the Practice Setting. He is a College Tutor for many years supporting the welfare and pastoral needs of students. Dr Noone has extensive experience in curriculum development and implementation, education, and administration, He supervises at undergraduate and post-graduate level. He has presented at conferences nationally and internationally. He isa reviewer for Nurse Education Today, an internationally renowned Journal in Nurse Education. His main research interest is the enhancement of critical thinking to advance nurses thinking and reasoning in academic and clinical nursing practice.
