Dissertation

Students undertaking the Nursing - Advanced Practice (ANP) programme are required to work in the area of practice.. The programme requires a strong commitment to the integration of theory and practice. Students are expected to integrate the theoretical content of the programme into the clinical setting and thus demonstrate understanding and proficiency in their clinical roles. To ensure this is being achieved a lecturer /practitioner with associated responsibilities will visit participants with their preceptors/mentors in their clinical practice area.

The clinical component of the programme is co-ordinated by a member of the programme team and facilitated by a designated Medical Practitioner and/or Advanced Nurse Practitioner/mentor who will provide supervision, support and learning opportunities, including opportunities to practice under supervision to gain the required competencies and clinical competence to practice at an advanced level in nursing in their specific practice setting. Opportunities for observations and supervision in practice areas relevant to the student specific learning outcomes are also sought and arranged by the course co-ordinator. The preceptor / mentor is expected to provide the student with supervision, support and learning opportunities over the duration of the programme with a specific requirement of 500 hours of direct supervision of advanced clinical practice.

Central to the nurse advanced practice competencies the successful completion is the verification of 500 supervised hours with their preceptor/mentor. Note: for candidates taking the prescribing component of the programme, an additional 96 hours of supervised practice is required. For candidates taking the ionising radiation module, a total of 10 supervised episodes is required.
